Battle of Cricketers - CW's Favorite Cricketer

I always find it amazing the amount of emnity he generated amongst his countrymen. No surprise he rubbed the poms up the wrong way, but the Aussie Irish Catholic faction barely had a good word to say about him.

Think avarice and mendacity are the two most repeated character flaws, with perhaps a lack of personal bravery in third.
Yeah, not exactly known for his generosity of spirit or understanding of the human condition

I think we can stop beating around the bush and probably say he was widely regarded as a ****, can't we?

You'd certainly never call him a man of the people - he was single-minded, stubborn and it does sound like he could be a downright see you next Tuesday at times. Though TBF there are plenty of people from both within and outside of cricket who had a genuinely warm regard for him as well and would happily sing his praises. Bradman's conflicts with the O'Reilly/Fingleton set were I think generated as much by coming from such fundamentally different viewpoints as any monumental character flaws on either side - and even the infamous animosity with O'Reilly cooled in later years.

Ha ha didn't realise time was up! Can I add my third to make it an even 140?

If yes, then I nominate Ray Lindwall.

In this battle, I'll go for Mushy.

Not Terrible
Andrew Hall, always found him incredibly likable. Pretty much one of the only South African players I've ever really been a fan of. Mushy was before my time, Shaoib is (N) and Younis is meh.

Yeah sure Sean. Added. If any one else wants to add players and hasn't had a chance to do so, you can in the next 24 hours.

My vote goes to Akhtar. I saw him for the first time in the series in South Africa and he was beating South African batsmen for sheer pace which really struck me as South Africans are generally very good players of pace bowling. When he came to Kolkata for that famous test, I looked forward and was glad I met him among all Pakistan players the most and that squad had Akram and Younis (reserve) and Miandad (coach) as well. Then he became very famous. Really love Akhtar and shame he could never meet his potential.

Mushy. Always comes across as a very likeable chap, did excellently for Sussex and as a coach for England. Like the bloke.
