I would love to hear from the moderators as to why subcontinent moderators cannot be appointed. The time zone issue is a bit puzzling really because with all due respects to Gingerfurball whom I really frankly haven't followed enough to judge him but certainly believe is a great pick, belongs to Glasgow (according to his location) and hence adds to the considerable European based moderators (from location mentioned - Jamee99, LoonyBob, Neil Pickup) Is it because the number of subcontinent based posters are far lesser in numbers here? Or is it that the forum just do not have quality subcontinent based posters who can qualify as moderators? I am not sure about the latter as from what I've seen here, guys like Jeevan, Gi Joe, etc have shown to be quite on par if not above the average posting quality of members in CW.
8-) I must have missed that post stating the CW policy to never appoint subcontinent mods.

Isn't silentstriker Indian?

Okay, timezone...but isn't that covered by the Aussie mods (genuine question) more or less?

How is 3 European moderators and an subcontinental moderator be any worse than 4 European moderators?

I seriously don't get the "time zone" thing. It is not just about housekeeping like deletion/merging etc, but about understanding the cultural perceptions and differences.

Also the difference between Europe and American time zones are roughly the same as Indian-UK or Indian-Australian ones. I see we have atleast 2 moderators based in the Americas.

.
Which is why I mentioned silenstriker...

Plus the most important reason to pick a mod is surely their ability to moderate and not their nationality?

If you are primarily concerned with having someone on the moderation team that understands the cultural preferences and nuances of the subcontinental poster, than surely Manan qualifies. If your beef is that Manan is not in the subcontinental time zone, then I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. From what I understand, the moderation team discusses any “controversial/thorny” issue as a team. So surely Manan will give the subcontinental perspective when discussing any bans/warnings within the team.

Its just not on. China has a population of over 1 billion and as far as I can see, is not represented on the moderation panel. There are even more ants than Chinese, and their species doesn't even get the gig. Wots going on, mods?

Is it my faulty recollection or wasn't something mentioned a while ago about members from the subcontinent not applying to be mods?

Can't say I blame 'em - seems like for the most part its a "damned if you do damned if you don't" sort of job

I have the greatest of respect for those who've moderated for any length of time - they must be mad mind

Exactly and if you read my post I've asked exactly that. Would love to know how posters like GI Joe or jeevan or an SJS (I think he excused himself) are any inferior to the moderators here.

8-) Way to miss the point. How many guys of chinese nationality are there in this forum?

My high school, which have 1,300 pupils, was split almost 50/50 between white Scots, and Scots of Pakistani descent (with the odd Indian thrown in), and in my adult working life I've worked beside plenty of Indians and Sinhalese - so while I might be a white European I've had plenty of subcontinental cultural influences growing up.

I think we have a good moderation team and requests of all people are listened to. CW has never been biased against people of subcontinent descent. Sudeep was a staff member for the longest time and we have staff members from the subcontinent regularly. In the moderation team, Manan understands the perspective and psychie of the subcontinent fan as well as any one. It is a non issue.

No one is saying they are inferior. Did GI Joe apply to be a mod? I applied and my behaviour was impeccable but I was not selected. So do I become inferior to Clapo? It is silly to think in these terms. It is a selection issue and some one will be selected over some one else . It is a mere co-incidence that there are no mods from the subcontinent. The Indian posters on CW are among the best nationalities represented and we have thers most constructive of discussions. You don't find people looking down on members from the subcontinent or any thing. You are given your due respect in this forum and you know it.

Sir Alex no one is saying they are inferior. You are going way overboard here and I don't think its helping matters at all.

We did have an issue 4-5 years ago in the forum when many Indian and Pakistani posters used to come here to fight with each other and to make threads about how Munaf Patel is the next Jeff Thompson. As a result even the normal members were looked on harshly at times. Jono and I raised this issue in a thread and once every one was aware how there might be distinction because of sheer instinct, we found no problems here on CW.

CW is a very warm place with a place for all kinds off people. The fact that Sanz has lasted so long on these forums (he got banned on most others he posted on) is a testament, he will himself agree to the good moderation policies in the forum.

I simply found the absence of subcontinental moderators on a sizeable moderator panel to be surprising and hence I questioned the same. Is it forbidden to ask "certain" questions here?
