Now calm down and accept that our poor performance has nothing to do with taking the power play a couple of overs early, and everything to do with the aussie bowlers again dominating our top and middle order.

Disappointed in NZ's really poor batting here. I have to say though, after the last two matches this collapse had an air of inevitability about it, even though I dared to hope when McCullum and Taylor were pushing along well. Provided the match isn't rained out I cannot see Australia failing to achieve this score and taking the series.

The dismissals of Guptill, McCullum and Taylor look particularly limp. Guptill especially I have been waiting and expecting to stand up and show his class (backed up by an excellent ODI record to date), but instead he's reverted to gifting his wicket between 20 and 30. The lower middle order does not inspire confidence and has been a problem for us for the last year or so. I can't understand the thinking behind sending Stewart in at 4 (instead of 6 or even 7) but I suppose that's minor in the scheme of things. Greatly surprised that Hopkins has scored runs. I'll take back a small portion of the critical comments I've directed at him in the last couple of years .

In hindsight, I think NZ lost the series when they failed to chase a fairly gettable total in the second ODI. We were always going to lose one or two games quite convincingly this series (especially when batting first) and therefore needed to take the tight ones - that was one such opportunity. Apart from that game this series has followed the same pattern as the last C-H series, with Australia starting slowly before winning convincingly in the 3rd and probably 4th matches.

Just seems to be the same old story of looking good for bits of the series, but failing on some fairly basic levels against sustained pressure from Australia. Injuries and strange selection policies seem to always be a theme of these series too.

Now to cross fingers and hope for a Bond-inspired miracle.

I was actually thinking of some of your posts when Hopkins started to make runs. I think he has decided that he has an average defensive technique and that fortune favours the brave. When was at the Wellington game he actually hooked a 150kms missile from Shaun Tait for six.

He seems used to actually batting at number 6 or 7 unlike Broom so seems to be doing better.

I also don't know why Shannan Stewart is so high up the order. Styris should have been 4. Or even number 3 letting Taylor bat 4.
