Cricketweb XI vs England
@ CWBCC Stadium (1st ODI)
Scorecard
Ball By Ball
It was Cricketweb XI's first One Day International on home soil in over a year as the improving England side were looking to start the series on the right note. With both teams making plenty of changes to their test squad the match proved to be a bit of a mystery with boths sides opting for batting depth and a number of part time bowlers, Cricketweb XI skipper Neil Pickup won the toss and elected to bat on a lovely day and the huge crowd were expecting plenty of runs to be scored.
James Stedman strode to the crease with the unfamilair Nick Scott with him, Stedman's CW Black team mate Ash Chaulk was left out of the playing eleven today as selectors kept faith with the pair that got the job done in New Zealand in January. The pair got the home team off to a terrific start as Scott in particular made the most of his home ground knowledge, playing his first international on his home patch Scott belted 14 boundaries on his way to an effortless 94 and was shattered to have missed out on his ton. Stedman's blessed run at the top of the order also continued as his 72 runs from 84 balls contributed heavily in the 176 run opening stand with Scott, both fell to a rejuvinated Ryan Sidebottom who looks in better form since the test series, with the job not done in form Red's batsman Rob Dauth came in at three, a position he has been devastating in during the Development League this season and again he looked the goods, his performance in batting through the rest of the innings was a measure of his new found maturity and ability to perform at this level, he finished with 75 from 67 balls unbeaten. New wicketkeeper Ben Read also continued his dazling form this season when he came in at the fall of Chirs Butler's wicket, Read smashed three sixes in his 41 not out and looked right at home in the international arena. Cricketweb XI finished with the impressive total of 329/3 with Ryan Sidebottom the only multiple wicket taker.
It proved to be a difficult chase for the visitors but they could take heart from the knowledge they gained chasing a good total on this very pitch just two days earlier against CW Green, openers Steve Davies and Craig Kieswetter went for a solid approach and attempted to build the innings while trying to keep the wickets in tact for later on, Cricketweb XI on the other hand had shut up shop as far as trying to take wickets went and were solely attempting to stop as many boundaries as they could, there was some good middle overs bowling by Kingsley Clapham and Liam Camps at times but the first wicket didn't fall until the score was at 236, Davies narrowling missing a maiden international ton when he holed out to Nick Scott off Neil Pickup for 93. Amazingly no more wickets were to fall in the innings as Kieswetter flew past a ton and later a brilliant 150 but the villian in the end of England was Johnathan Trott as he failed to capitalise on a good start and struggled to score above a run a ball, the final total proved to be 302/1 which on most days would be considered excellent, but it just wasnt enough for a team lacking any real options.
