I am fine with the system of post counts and join dates. It is completely fine IMO.

No, it isn't, actually. People don't transform into another person to do forum posting. And unless you're suggesting that someone posts posts for someone else in their name (so, for instance, that I'm not actually Richard Dickinson but someone posting pretending to be me) then that's the only way someone posting forum posts could be different from the person who is posting those same posts.

I post on here because I don't have anything else to do. Hence, while I might 'enjoy' posting, it's a relative enjoyment. I'd much rather be doing other things, if the chance presented itself. Some of the stuff on here is good, because I'd never get to talk about cricket in that way with others. But a lot of it just suggests I'm wasting my life.

Meh, each to their own. I love cricket, I love computers, I love the internet. Would far rather be doing something that involved all three than, well... most things, really. A good drinking session with good music and good friends is about the only other thing I'm really concerned with making sure I get enough of.

Obviously one has to work\study-to-improve-work-prospects, but that's compulsory and not the sort of thing anyone'd do if they won the lottery.

And to be honest, I look at join date on those rare occasions I'm wondering how 'senior' a poster is.

If you want to find-out how "senior" a poster is (and I agree with you that such occasions are rare - I know that just by having been around the forum regularly for many years) then I'm sorry but join-date in itself is of little use. Same way a number of runs is in itself useless to tell you how good or otherwise a batsman is. Someone could have joined in 2003 and have posted on, say, 20 short isolated occasions over 7 years. That doesn't make them a "senior" poster.

I agree with SJS, people arguing against removing it would be better off just admitting they like it, rather than saying "oh it won't do anything".

It won't do any good. As I said, I'd be in favour of removing it from what I'm assured is called the "postbit", but I think it'd be pointless to get rid of them altogether. For me, as I've always said, postcounts are a harmless bit of fun and yes, I wouldn't really want them removed completely.

Regarding postcounts - I post at a forum of similar-ish size to CW that has disabled postcounts entirely - the closest a regular member has to a postcount is searching for all of their posts and checking the number of results they get. It's a great forum - very friendly. Not sure if the postcount disabling has much to do with it, though... it only was done to stop people spamming to up their postcount. However, with some people around the place with such high postcounts I actually think it might be worth disabling them from the postbits at the least to ensure that people can forget about any idea of superiority they might get out of them - or inferiority, in the case of newer members.

Personally I think there's certainly something going for the notion that a poster - like me - could look intimidating purely on account of my postcount. It's something I don't want, and thus I'd be in favour of removing them from postbits. I want n00bs to listen to what I say (like "we don't need this thread") because it makes sense, not because I've got 80,000 posts, or however many presently applicable.

Kinda leads onto thread drift, actually. I don't think mods need to be too heavy handed, but equally when threads start to veer wildly off from their original topic it'd be nice if one could lend a gentle but firmly stearing hand.

Noticed Candy doing it in the "Rank the domestic first class competitions" thread, so kudos to him.

I know what you just said, but I feel I want to offer this. I have visited another forum and they have disabled post counts unless you go looking through somebodies profile, and they have banned double posting, including mods. Also, since James tends to be in favour, why not have a thread with a poll with those in favour or not, and let the masses vote, they have until a certain time, and then the decision is made on what the members have voted for. Sounds fair, right?
