*Official* England in Bangladesh

Saw the first 8 or so overs of our reply in the boozer at lunchtime. Don't want to write the boy off too previously, but I have to say I did call it:

Don't get many right, so am paying that one.

Still the only test nation never to lose to Bangladesh tho. Go us!
Saw "highlights" of his hundred last week and he looked an out and out slogger - very disappointing

How he is selected as a specialist batsman in front of Trott is beyond me

I would imagine it's beyond Trott as well, after his scores of 87, 9 and 52* in the games against SA.

He's been hyped up beyond belief, given that he's not even the best young wicketkeeper batsman available to England right now.

Hopefully this sort of game will show even the biggest naysayers that Bangladesh are a competitive side.

Not holding out much hope though.
Bangladesh showed today that in the right conditions, ie at home, they can be a match for most sides, for most of the game. They understandably lack the recognition and ability to grasp a game, I say understandably because when you have been beaten as frequently and for as long as they have, it is a tough habit to break.

They don't know how to win, how to close games out, and of course there is a lot of inexperience in the side that probably do not know yet how to play certain situations in any standard of cricket, let alone at the very top level.

The talent has been identified by the Bangladesh management, and talent with some potential, looking at some of the young players on show. They will improve over time and as their experience grows and their skills become more consistent. At the moment they still have much to learn, and that showed today.

True. They are improving, the tough part is going to be keeping their fans satisfied. A bit more application in their batting will do good. In yesterdays match I just saw the first few overs of Bangladesh innings but the shot Aftab got out to was horrendous. They have guys who put a premium on their wicket, if they can all grasp it, they will be much better.

Yes they certainly have been known to gift one or two wickets away like Aftab's today. As you say, it was a shocking stroke, and completely unnecessary at that stage of the game. I'm all for positive intent, but you do have to play the percentages also.

Eoin Morgan played the percentages wonderfully well, he identified the areas he wanted to target, and the bowlers he was going to play where. There's not much thought that goes into Bangladesh's batting sometimes.

*Sighs* He is barely a cricketer for me. Lacks the skills. He bats but isnt a batsman and bowls but isnt a bowler.

I dont mind his selection too much as we are desperate but I dont pretend to think he can ever be anything more than an occassional weapon.
I don't know... I just think he's good for the no.7 role in our team at the moment. He's still very young for an all-rounder too, and he's improved a lot the last year or two, so hopefully that'll continue on. It's good to see his improvement in FC cricket too, because I think that shows improvement in skills.

Left the game with Morgan looking plumb LBW to Mahmudullah (?). Didn’t give England a prayer.

TBF they've always been capable of beating solid test sides in ODIs, and never been capable of beating them in tests. Nevertheless, I don't like giving teams credit for getting themselves into winning situations before throwing the game away. Would be disgusted if anyone had tried to do that when Ireland took England to the wire in August.

Bangladesh are now beginning to consistently put together competitive totals though. A few years back, they were just getting rolled over for 150 every game, even on decent tracks.

Well Morgan was plumb LBW and that was not the only decision towards the end that was not adjudged LBW even though the ball was going to hit the stumps. Rod Tucker committed the crime of 2 whereas the other umpire Nadir Shah put down one I think. So yeah, at the end it was against Bangladesh in every way...and bringing on Shafiul did aid that cause even further, thanks to a late brain fart from Shakibl

.....

Also, I'm willing to take close defeats ANY DAY over the horrible surrenders Bangladesh used to face even 2 years or so ago!

Sidebottom gone home and Bresnan called up to the Test squad. Finn comes in to the Test squad as cover.
