John Howard to head ICC?

Actually I read up on him as soon as I saw the story and I find it amusing that you think this dude is more qualified than someone who ran a country for 11 years. If anything, John Howard is too qualified.

Though obviously that depends heavily on the arbitrary criteria you are creating for the term "qualified" which is clearly designed post-hoc to suite your fellow.
George W. Bush ran the world's biggest economy and sole super power for 8 years. I suppose that makes even more qualified than Howard to haed the ICC?

George W. Bush for ICC president!

Not sure why all the suggestions about Howard being racist are coming from tbh, that's the last thing I would've labeled him
Well he is Australian, look at the logic of the posters. Australia supply hundreds of millions of dollars in aid to asia and some posters think Howard is now sucking up because of the $.

And yet you find this acceptable.

Maybe its a new ******. He/she/it IS Australian after all
Flem's post was nigh on a month ago, and was NOT reported by several other members (unlike yours) so it's not at all relevant to what you've just said. It's also quite clear though, that his post was firmly tongue-in-cheek, whilst all your doing is trying to wind up the NZers.

Anyway, so the thread isn't taken any further off-track, send an email to moderators@cricketweb.net if you want to discuss it further.

There are a lot of cracks beneath the surface in international cricket, but they stay beneath the surface for the most part and cricket is able to function well. Howard will smash those cracks with a sledgehammer and the damage will be irreparable.

Care to elaborate? Was it a tougher stance on Immigration or something ?
Well the Tampa affair and the 9/11 attacks made everyone worry about border security, and Beazley was probably gonna win for sure before that.

It's basic, but it's really complicated.

I don't think the post of ICC president matters much. It is basically a honorary post and I am not sure how Howard can act as a tough guy who can exert a bit of control on the subcontinental block, particularly the BCCI. However he can strengthen the Anglo-Australian block given his warm relationship with the UK during his days as PM. BCCI cannot and should not "dictate" ICC matters, and for that a sensible, proactive and creative "opposition" is a must.

To be fair to Howard.
India had way better relations with Australia under him than under RUDD.Under who the relations have deteriorated a fair bit.

But do not think it matters in this thread.

7. Race card - Pretty simple this one, the race card is thrown about now and again. Not frequently, and I must say only be a small minority, but it's ugly as hell. I think labelling someone a racist on the basis of flimsy evidence is a horrific thing to do, I really do, and I think doing this should be a bannable offence.

Was Tampa a fabrication? Yes

Did Howard's own policies do more to erode Oz's border security than anything else? Yes

Was it racist? No just politics

Did Beazley stand a snowflakes chance in hell of winning that election in any event? Doubt it

Anyway, back to this issue - cant stand Howard but wouldnt mind so much if NZ hadnt put up a credible option and it hadnt been their turn

We'll have a picnic down by Darling Harbour, Burgey, and reminisce about the good old days of cricket.

Exactly.

Just as when Rudd let Sri Lankans rot on the high seas rather than take them to the mainland. And his disgraceful display in refusing to sit next to Chinese ambassador over fears of how it might be seen back here in Australia.

I personally think this is a poor appointment. Howard is too old (he'll be nearing his mid 70s at the end of his reign) and is not familiar enough with how cricket administration. operates.
