His List A record is crap, his ODI record is crap, his T20i record is worse than crap and he looks like crap at the crease. Apart from that he looks like a winner.

He needed another solid-spectacular 18 months before being selected as he isnt good enough at the moment.
Yeah, AWTA strongly, and said so at the time of his initial selection as well.

His ODI record is not crap, it's far from excellent, but if you consider more than half his games have come against the world champions Australia, he's a young man fresh into international cricket, yet his average is just under 30, a decent enough platform to build on. To suggest it is crap would be to overlook a number of factors, which you clearly have done.

His List A again is a decent start, last season he averaged over 50!!Apart from that he looks a no-hoper!

Clearly you haven't seen a great deal of him in domestic cricket, so I can understand how certain conclusions are jumped to. He doesn't look the best at the crease at the moment, that tends to be the case when you're out of form.

At times players are selected more on potential that anything they have done of any great substance. Imo, when decisions are made like this in Denly's case, you cannot necessarily expect him to take international cricket by storm, he is still learning his game. He will get better by playing ODI's, providing he continues to make the odd contribution. Consistency will come with experience.

You reckon? Too much of England's attack looks imminently hitable afaics.
Pak's opening pair is laughable and they have lost their last 10 international games. 11 if you include Pak A.

Though the wicket is immeasurably better than what was played on yesterday.

Yeah, just as you clearly overlook his only score at ODI level is against a below strength Ireland.

We clearly have different standards

Woodster quite obviously has differing standards to most. There's no chance Denly's been or looked remotely International class.

If you ignore his 53 against Australia, which along with Ponting was the highest score in the game and crucial in leading England to a four wicket victory.

I agree that the standard he is currently showing is not anywhere near what he is capable of, or what is expected at the top level. My belief is he'll get it right, yours is that he won't anytime soon. That's fine.

I agree he is not looking international class currently. If you are selecting a young inexperienced cricketer you are exceptionally fortunate if he comes in and has instant success and consistency. It is oh so easy to reflect on a poor start and simply say drop him end of, not good enough. You need to look past that a little.

Have to say, I like Key as a pundit in the studio, really enjoy listening to him talk.

I think we should be able to defend this score, 148 looks a good score on this pitch I reckon. Pietersen made the pitch look a lot easier than it actually is, and Pakistan's batting line-up doesn't look particularly strong. Just hope Shahzad goes well.

He's not really done it on a consistent basis at Domestic level either though. I personally feel it's a matter of picking him 'cause he's looked good on Sky a few times. I don't really see what we're supposed to look past and see, as he's not really achieved anything that would indicate he's going to be a serious success at International level. He has potential, but you can't leave someone in the side in the hope that by fluke he comes good. Kieswetter has to play in the next game of T20 I think.

Shahzad's started nicely
