Not Terrible
I particularly remember the '07 World Cup semi where Taylor played and missed at every ball of a Malinga over or something ridiculous. It's not even like Malinga or Rubel really swing it...he just doesn't seem able to come to terms with the natural shaped created by that action.
Wonder if he'll have the same issue with other slingy type bowlers like Johnson.

I am not sure that I appreciate having my post called ignorant. In its defence 3 or 4 members of the New Zealand team are not test quality. Patel has a FC average of 39 and a batting average of 13. Yovich has a bowling average of 33 and a batting average of 29. Who would you prefer - the selectors went with Patel. I am sure that Yovich would not have embarrassed himself and now at 247/5 having him coming in next ahead of Tuffey wouldn't be such a bad thing.

The other suggestion I thought I said was Nathan McCullum who has been on NZ A tours and did ok. The major knock on Yovich is his age.
I think people should be allowed to think outside of the square and make suggestions.
Yeah I think Nathan McCullum would've been a good pick. Quite possibly a better bowler than Patel judging by their respective records. Even if he isn't, the gap obviously isn't very big and given he's being picked as the fifth bowler, and given New Zealand have an otherwise long tail (and brittle top order, really), batting should definitely come into it.

Well, he has played Johnson a number of times before.

tbh Johnson's main weapon is sliding the ball across the right-handers, so in theory he should trouble Taylor- having said that, so far it just seems as though Taylor has problems against Malinga and bowlers who copy Malinga's action lol

Bruce Martin and Nathan McCullum are both better bats than Patel and have better domestic bowling records, as well as being around the same age.

There seems to be a perception that Patel's bowling has a higher ceiling than the other two though....he just looks a better bowler, loop, drift, all those lovely buzz words- but basically he's never done much at either first class or international level, he's almost 30 and doesn't seem to be improving, and I think it's pretty much time to accept that either he's not going to fulfill his potential, or his potential was overestimated on aesthetic grounds.

btw I don't really think Martin or McCullum would be successful test spinners either...I just think we are kidding ourselves thinking we have any business playing two spinners.

played Aamer well but Aamer is no slinger.Would be interesting to know how he tackled Anderson and Steyn.

Basically apart from struggling to hit Malinga, Taylor's career thus far has been a lot of good looking batting coupled with holing out to ridiculous slog sweeps and other ill-judged shots. I can't say I recall any particular type of bowling unduly troubling him.

And how stupid the idea of starting a Test match at 12pm.
I can see the logic in starting late and finishing around 7-7.30pm to attract a crowd coming home from work to drop in for the third session, but it just hasn't worked and I can remember only seldom days' play in New Zealand with the experimented noon start that haven't finished early.

Well, it generally works well in December and January, but it;s just foolish to continue to do so in February.

Was it last year that they scheduled a test match over the weekend that Daylight Savings ended? That was even crazier.

yea though that was due to India deciding they wanted an extra test after the schedule was done. If i remember rightly, play started 30 mins early after the change for daylight saving. Also had no problems with the weather, March and April are normally pretty dry in NZ

Broom doesnt deserve to be in the squad!
Are you serious?

Last time I checked averaging 42.88 in the closest form of the game to test cricket was better than averaging 27.02. But hey, feel free to prove me wrong.

Yeah I wish people would realise that fc/test cricket is a different kettle of fish than list a/odi .. I really don't know how the selectors can't see that Broom is more suited to the longer form of the game, unless his stats are really misleading as I haven't seen much of him playing first class cricket.

He's a left-armer though.

To be fair to Taylor, Malinga was bowling like a god around that time. It was just after his four in four and the whole world was on one big Malinga-love trip. It's not really the type of spell I'd judge Taylor's technical deficiencies on.

That said, it was pretty humiliating. I was almost embarrassed for him.

Gupitil and McCullum both did Bangladesh a Favor by Accepting the light

Both of them could have raced away, instead theres a slight window for Bangladesh now.

Shahadat really gave New Zealand some life, really poor bowling from him, Forced Shakib to over use Rubel and Shafiul, could have gotten New Zealand all out if he had a decent day.

I watched the start of this while falling asleep. I loved Ingram's attitude.

Less so his technique, but that's not so important :p.

I thought the light was no longer "offered" anymore, and the decision was solely up to the umpires?

What has happened to Shahadat? Last time he came to NZ he was bowling low 140's consistently and hitting the deck hard. Now he steams in and is bowling high 120's, really disappointing.

The post number of your post is very apt.

Well played Guptill. I still think he'll get spit-roasted by Johnson and Bollinger, but in the longer run, a move to the middle order might well do him some good.
