Hmmm. I was missing a week.

So, Davis Cup, then plenty of options. Doesn't look like I earned any ranking points in weeks 7, 8 & 9 last year, so as you say plenty of opportunities to make up the 80 points lost in Zagreb.

It is hard to take the Davis Cup factor into account until we know who makes up the World Group. There'll be a week off for the losing country as the enter the Europe/Africa Zone I as top seed, and get a bye.

SA Tennis Open - Qualifying

  • Top seed in qualifying, Mat Mitchell was rarely given any trouble as he coasted into the main draw of the SA Tennis Open - his first ATP main draw since San Jose nearly a year ago. Mitchell overcame a spirited display from India's Sankar Kadam in the second round of qualifying 7-6(4), 6-3 after his first round bye, and then sealed qualification with a 6-0, 6-2 win over big-serving doubles specialist Christophe Norman of Belgium. For what seems like the hundredth time, Mitchell opens his campaign against none other than compatriot Matt Bre.
  • Whilst Mitchell plays his first ATP tournament in nearly a year, Rick Langley plays his first ATP tournament after out-muscling sixth seeded local Matthew Oertel of South Africa. After starting by coming from a set down to beat Nikolay Ryzhikov of Russia 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, Langley tamed Oertel in straight sets 6-3, 7-5. His ATP debut comes against fourth seed Atthaphol Sae-ul; a man ranked 145 places higher than the West CWLander.

Movistar Open - Qualifying

  • A stunning upset by Pierre Rose has seen him book an unlikely place in the main draw in Santiago; winning 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(4) over second seeded Italian Marco Pellegrini. As one of the lowest ranked entrants in the qualifying draw, Rose was dealt an easy start against Chilean wildcard Thomas Carrera which he eased through 6-3, 6-4, before then being given a boost as he was drawn against another local; Jorge Guerra. He came through that contest 7-6(4) 7-5, but was a rank outsider against Pellegrini. Despite not being all that experienced on the clay, Rose advanced to a maiden ATP main draw in three sets in a great performance. He also has every chance of winning through to the second round against local wildcard Alex Rojas. If he can succeed there, a second round clash with Ion Andueza awaits.

Burnie Challenger - Qualifying
  • Three CWLanders won the requisite two matches required to qualify in Burnie in a very weak qualifying draw largely made up of locals. After making the third round of the boys' singles in Melbourne, Koal Kao advanced to the main draw in Tasmania by beating out Cory Loggins 6-1, 6-3 in the qualifying round. It was in start contrast to his tough start as he was forced to come from a set and a break down to beat 36-year old Tasmanian Joe Duncan 3-6 7-5 6-2. Jason Lawley, meanwhile, had it easier as he impressively tore through opposition to move to the main draw. First up was Spencer Magoffin who ate a 7-5, 6-1 loss, whilst Declan Flower fared no better in his 6-4, 6-2 loss. Finally Jack Loughman followed up some good performances in Heilbronn as he beat Michael Radic (6-1, 6-2) and Luke Barnes (6-2, 3-6, 6-2). Kao begins against France's Henri Ducard, Loughman plays Japan's Dai Hashimoto and Lawley has Morocco's Omar Allali.

Singles

It was a great first day at Heilbronn for competitors from the former CWLand Republic as a number of the seeds were dumped out of the tournament unceremoniously.

  • Jake Loughman enjoyed a solid first round at Burnie after a decent run in qualifying. Japanese player Dai Hashimoto started off well enough, but showed a severe lack of match fitness as he capitulated rapidly after narrowly losing the first set. The CWLander, who has played a fair number of matches of late, steamrollered Hashimoto in the 2nd to progress 6 - 4, 6 - 1.
  • Loughman's countryman Koal Kao suffered defeat at the hands of Henri Ducard. Ducard dominated the deciding set after the first two sets had been shared in a cagey beginning to the match. However, Ducard appeared to up his intensity in the decider whilst Kao was unable to find anything left in the tank. Ducard advancing 6 - 4, 6 - 7 (3 - 7), 6 - 1.
  • Jason Lawley again failed to progress past the first round of a Challenger tournament, despite an impressive qualifying campaign. He certainly had his chances to take the match as after losing the first set, he led a massive turnaround in fortunes by taking the 2nd and then going 3 - 0 up in the decider. However, Lawley choked in sight of the finishing line, losing 5 games in a row to Moroccan Omar Allali before bowing out 6 - 3, 3 - 6, 6 - 4.
  • 12th Seed Marcuss Deane got off to a poor start before giving Irishman Eoin O'Malley a sound beating. Deane played awfully in the first set, his first serve only hitting 49%, but even so, O'Malley struggled to gain traction. It was never going to be good for O'Malley if Deane managed to get his game together, and it was no surprise that when the Deane serve managed to find its range that O'Malley hardly got a look in. With the pressure off his own serve, Deane piled in on O'Malley's game; systematically dismantling his technique to progress 4 - 6, 6 - 1, 6 - 1.
  • A bye for 8th seed Randy Banks will see him take on Algerian Khaled Moussaoui for his first Burnie outing.

Doubles

  • West CWLand pairing Randy Banks and Koal Kao had an excellent first round encounter against 2nd seeds Sunil Colaco and Gurpreet Rao. The youthful CWLanders burst out of the blocks in the first set, overwhelming the Colaco serve to love. Unfortunately, the wily Indian duo fought back firmly to level the match at 2 - 2 by sustained pressure on the first Kao service game. With the pressure firmly on the CWLanders, a torrential downpour swept across the stadium, suspending play with the set level at four a piece.
    The rain blew away as swiftly as it had arrived, and the match resumed in slippery conditions. With Colaco struggling for grip, two double faults resulted to give the CWLanders two break points, which they only needed one of, following a long and tiring rally.
    The 2nd set was all over within 25 minutes as the Indians continued to struggle in the damp conditions. Banks and Kao sweeping to a 6 - 4, 6 - 2 win.

Great start in the Doubles... Kao and Banks really do look like a quality pairing... Lookout Grand Slams in the next few seasons...

Banks will be looking to get his first title at this event... Seems to have hit his straps after the 1st round KO at the Aust Open...
