Superior indeed when compared to an under strength Indian batting line-up. Superior without doubt against a side in which a specialist WK who is miles away from international class played as a specialist bat just because there were no suitable replacements present in the ground.
The bowling was full strength, though. Unless you want to posit that Sreesanth is a better pick than Ishant, that's both possible and unlikely. Any chances of winning this match disappeared when India just couldn't get SA out once.

I'd like to hide behind excuses too, but there don't seem to be any good ones around.

I know Laxman is injured...whats up with Yuvi and Dravid????? India really needs to beef up that middle order around Sachin...

Its almost unfair to put the inexperienced young batsmen in front of Steyn and Morkel....

This pitched wasn't tailored for a result unless one team played poorly and other superbly. Under normal circumstances, Ind would have (ofc imo) posted a decent reply. Otherwise we would be losing everytime a team scored 500+ batting first in India

What did us what we needed to get 150 more runs out of GG and Dhoni. 150 more runs also equates in to 40-50 more overs for the batting side. So if Ind had done that a draw would have been a more likely result. If Ind had both Dravid and Laxman playing, I guess, the chances of getting those 150 runs more from GG, Dhoni, Dravid and Laxman would have been too good to not materialize. In fact, they could have got more too!

It's hilarious if anyone thinks losing Dravid and Laxman both at the same time wasn't a blow for India!

Not really having any of that. South Africa won because they bowled so much better than India did. It's not like Vijay and Badrinath are bad batsmen. As Dhoni was gracious enough to admit, the top order generally were getting out to really, really good deliveries.

It's a blow, but wouldn't have made India a better team to draw matches at home.

It would be a better side to draw the game, I have no doubts abt that esp considering Dravid's recent form

It's laughable that you are even debating that a side with Dravid and Laxman to support Viru and Tendulkar, along with GG, wouldn't have been a better team to draw the game at home. Also considering that Viru and Tendulkar got 100s against that superb bowling

Dravid could have kept those good deliveries out. He isn't known as the wall for no reason.

I am not getting too optimistic here and I am not saying that we could have won. We could have comfortably drawn the game if Dravid had played. He could have supported Sehwag in the first innings and Sehwag would have stayed out there longer without as much pressure.

He's not superman. If you lose by an innings, it's rarely because one or two guys. If India had lost by 30 runs, you could argue that point.

You lose by an innings because you got owned.

India lost by an innings mate - it wasn't close. It's superior, period. Amla alone scored more than India's entire first innings.....

Fast bowling wins matches anyway, but regardless of that, SA are clearly the superior team all around.
Apart from Amla and Kallis, nobody else really made big runs did they? With Laxman coming back a big chunk of the batting deficiency in the middle order will be solved, and Tendulkar, Sehwag all are in form too. Gambhir just had a poor game after months of sterling consistency so nothing really needs to be done on that front immediately. Badri had a good first innings under extreme pressure but it is actually Vijay who is the sore thumb here. He bats like a god but his inconsistency reminds me of the gun in my avatar. We are better than SA in terms of batting strength going into the second test, but our bowling is not even 30% as strong as SA's. Their worst bowler, Parnell can give our best bowler, Zaheer a run for his money and Harris looks ten times as better as Harbhajan. If we don't really wake up to the FACT that our bowling is perhaps in the middle or lower rung as far as test nations are concerned we are not going maintain our rankings. Right now, the temporary solution is to plough down the Eden Gardens wicket and starve it to purgatorial finesse and let loose all our spinners on it.

A super human effort wasn't required to merely draw this game though. India just missed Dravid who has proven multiple times in the past that he can hold one end without losing his wicket for many sessions.

India missed BOTH Dravid and Laxman in this test match. This pitch was essentially tailor made for Laxman. No real uneven bounce, reasonable pace off the bat and bowlers pitching it up, the stuff he would put away for runs day after day. Add to that a left arm spinner bowling at his legs.

^ top 5 batsmen for Ind since 1 Jan 2009 .... It's not too much to expect that a guy averaging 80 and another 68 would have done a better job than some of the in-experienced players, especially condidering that players of similar quality, Viru and Tendulkar, got 100s against that superb bowling!

Dravid and Laxman have poor record against SA.. I don't think their presence would have made any difference.

Yeah, he could have. He also might not have. That's so easy to say in his absence.

The difference in quality between Dravid and Vijay is the difference between winning and losing a tiny, tiiiny proportion of the time. It's just not an excuse when you lose this heavily.

The bowling has to take a lot of the flak.

It's not as if India were skittled twice. Although run scoring is supposedly easier in the subcontinent, India scored 560 runs in the match. That should be reasonably defendable for a good bowling unit.

SA scored 558/6 , with Amla 253* and KingKallis 173.How the hell is somebody going to score big.If somebody did score big SA would have ended at 700 odd and batting well into the 3rd day.
Point I am trying to make is that the 340 partnership pretty much insured SA a 500plus total with 50 from AB and 30 from Boucher.

As a South African supporter, I'm still nervous going into the 2nd match. I don't think India are anywhere close to the pushovers that you guys are talking about.

A turner (and even though I'll moan about it, it's well within their rights to do so, as long as we oblige with a Kingsmead mamba come the return leg) and Smith's recent record at the toss, would mean some serious pressure for SA. Prince is still under huge pressure, AB's not really at his most fluent & Duminy can't buy a run. Smith, Kallis & Amla can't do it all the time.

I hope theres some atmosphere at Eden Gardens, did anyone in Nagpur even know there was a game on? Disgraceful.

This was perhaps the most humiliating defeat for Indian team. Ian Chappell was absolutely correct about hidden short comings of Indian team. ICC Ranking system is rather dubious. Number 1 so called Team has been given a knock out punch at their own backyard and still these Indians claim that they deserve Number 1 spot? It also shows how well England performed against South Africa 1-1 away result was just fantastic for England. These Indians were outplayed by a team which could not beat England at home in 4 match test series. What a shame for Number 1 side in the world. Whats the point of Sachin scoring centuries i mean its worthless. Still India got an innings defeat.
