It's the reason why India won't stay #1 for long. Zaheer may be your best ATM, but I wouldn't put him in the top echelon of fast bowlers in the world right now. It's why I think Australia will be #1 again in the very near future. Our pace attack is just awesome right now.
That's true. How the hell did we lose to England?

haha taking it too far and neither does Harmy 7-12 deserves to be rated so highly.
really, xuhaib? being from the sub continent I thought you would agree with me on the greatness of steyn's spell on this track, which is not out and out seamer friendly. why do you think it doesnt belong among the top spells of all time?

regarding harmison, taking 7 for 12 is bloody difficult for a fast bowler anywhere (compared to spinners frequently achieving such figures on crumbling wickets). i think it deserves a mention but would rate it below the other spells, including the steyn performance in this game.

india doesnt deserve to be no.1 for long. ian chappell got it right when he mentioned about the lack of match winning bowlers. they certainly deserved to get to the top coz they managed to beat enough top teams enough number of times in a reasonably long period. but they equally deserve to lose the crown after a while to a team with better bowling strength. there is no doubt india, south africa and australia are pretty closely packed right now but SA deserve the crown for a while at least. once rahul and sachin retire india are likely to slip down to the england, new zealand standard.

I agree with most that India's problem are in the bowling department. Possibly many will disagree, but I think even Harbhajan Singh is a much overrated bowler. If you take a look at all test bowlers with over 300 wickets under their belt, you'll see Harby has the worst average, with Vettori as the only exception.

Having said so, I keep wondering why India couldn't come up with a better batsman than Saha.... He has a FC average of 35. Hardly promising figures for test cricket.

Can't see how ENG & NZ are on the same standard. But one thing IND so have in their favour is the hottest young batting talents in the world iATM 'd say. in Panday, Kohli, Pujara, Sharma, Raina, Vijay these guys could be anything in tests, but equally they all could do like Yuvraj not step up.

The same way England beat South Africa in 98. One of those odd occurances in tests, when the inferior team does better than expected.
England gets structurally underated, mostly by their own press. Maybe last summer's series win was the odd occurance, but what about drawing a series in SA and being the favourites for a series win at the start of the last day of that series in India?

Sharma and Raina aren't likely to ever be much chop at the test level tbh.

^ Rohit averages 53 at domestic level and hits 300s like its a regular milestone.

You can't write off players with your limited viewing from afar. Even if it is the CW way.

Don't get me wrong Steyn was bloody brilliant but the lower order batting was straight from the 70's not getting behind the line of the ball is seriously not on unless you are Chris Martin.Saha and Vijay should not be leaving those balls especially in sub cont where the old ball can jag back a bit.

As for Harmy's spell fro what I remember it was a decent spell where somehow almost every decent ball eneded up with a wicket.

Steyn at Melbourne,Mcgrath at Lords,Asif-Kandy and Hoggard match winning effort at Jo'burg are some that stick out as being more memorable atleast for me.

Defiantely lucky not to have lost at least 2-1 to SA recently. In the capetown last day, if De Wet wasn't unfit to bowl & Smith didn't have to bowl Steyn/Morkel into the ground, i certainly believe SA would have won.

I worry about how ENG will go in Ashes this year. England are tough team mentally, but lack of real quality depth is big issue ATM.

Which series againts IND are you refering to BTW?

Ya never know. Sharma has indeed fell of, but only the other day he was looking excellent in ODIs just like what Kohli is right now.

Raina well his technique tends to make you feel he may not do that well in test i agree. But the talent is their..

Left armers coming over the wicket bowling outside leg stump... always has me have my heart in my mouth.

Harris to Tendulkar, no run, turns in from outside leg stump, Tendulkar goes for the sweep, misses and the ball goes past the leg stump, past Dhoni and Smith, standing very fine at short fine-leg, covers up

December 2008, when Panesar refused to take any wickets on the 5th day. Tendulkar and Yuvraj sealed the deal for India
Oh yea. Well going into that 5th day ENG had indeed dominated that Chennai test without a doubt. But they didn't finish of the job, although one can argue the pitch really flattened out.

Haa seems like a cricinfo typo that. It should have read at the end... past Dhoni and Boucher, Smith standing very fine at short fine-leg, covers up.
