Group A: Cobras vs East Robbham Upper Body
An epic innings by Graeme Smith came up short, as Jack McNamara rewarded his captain's confidence and held his nerve to complete a narrow 3-run win for East Robbham. Upper Body started strongly with the bat through imports Shane Watson (20) and Phil Hughes (57), but the show was stolen by Dan Smith's 4 sixes in 32 from 10 balls. From there, Liam Camps added late impetus with a 13-ball cameo of 30, and the CWers set an imposing target of 209.
But Smith refused to surrender. Instead he lashed three boundaries in Nath Patrick's first over, and added 10 more, with an incredible 9 sixes on his way to 148. The next highest score was a mere 19 by opening partner Puttick, and he was the first of three wickets for the impressive Cannon (3-37), on T20 debut. Patrick had the faith in his main bowlers to use just 5 of them, and the likes of Watson did not feature at all with the ball. The ploy almost backfired when Mat Mitchell was clubbed for 32 runs by Smith, in his final over. But Patrick himself bowled a brilliant 19th over, surrendering just a boundary and dismissing Kleinveldt (4).
Cobras were then left needing 14 from the final over, with Smith on strike. Amazingly the ball was handed to left-arm spinner Jack McNamara, who had bowled 3-0-29-0 to that point. Operating around the wicket at the left-handed Smith, he gave up just 10 runs to salvage a tight win.
Upper Body 208-7 (20 overs)
PJ Hughes 57 (45), DP Smith 32 (10), LA Camps 30 (13)
VD Philander 2-25 (3)
Cape Cobras 205-5 (20 overs)

MA Cannon 3-37 (4)
Upper Body won by 3 runs | Man of the Match: GC Smith
Group B: West Robbham Rabid Wolves vs Somerset
Tight death bowling by Dav Richards helped Rabid Wolves to a winning start at the Champions League. The left-armer bowled flat and full to surrender just 13 from his 4-over allowance. The spell included a 5-run 18th over, and Somerset fell 19 runs short of Rabid Wolves' total, also set up by the enterprising CW Black allrounder.
Richards (43 not out) entered at a troublesome 85-6, which soon became 96-9, and played calmly with last man Raghav to add 65 and move on to a competitive total. He mixed quick running with inventive strokeplay, and counted 8 fours in his innings, while Raghav was very handy with 24.
The Somerset response sputtered to start, when Matt Mikey Smith picked up 3 cheap wickets at first change. While higher profile stars Kev Gough and Andrew Flintoff struggled with their control, Smith settled into rhythm and prove a definite handful for the Englishmen. Only CWer Rob Dauth (63) and West Indian Omari Banks (43) looked assured, and they added 64 for the sixth wicket to keep Somerset in contention. Richards then slowed the scoring rate, and Somerset were left needing 30 from the final over. Flintoff was charged with the task of defending it, and gave up 11 from the first 4 balls. He then had Banks fortuitously caught down the legside - Mørk's 5th take of the innings - and denied the new batsman the 20 needed from the final delivery.
Rabid Wolves 159 all out (19.3 overs)
DP Richards 43* (22), SC Morris 30 (14), SA Bennett 28 (17)
