Brad Haddin

Is Brad Haddin Australia's best wicket-keeping option?

Dhoni's keeping is very underrated here. Of course he is **** when it comes to keeping upto the stumps but then in the subcontinent, almost every keeper has been that in the last few years. However keeping to fast bowlers he is pretty good. Sorry for the digression.

I can see what Haddin was trying to do, and hit out a bit on a green top, in the first innings. But that doesn't mean that you do it every ball!

Certainly the best option in Australia, and whilst I wouldn't say that he is definitely the best in the world, I probably wouldn't want to trade him for any other options either.

I rate him but he does have a very distinct tendency to score when Australia are ahead and fail when they're in trouble.

Keeping to fast bowlers is easy though. That's not what he's paid for. I don't really buy "everyone else is **** too" as an excuse :p.

But I would rather have him in my team than Haddin. Being the best test captain in the world (by a distance IMO) helps.

Very similar average- I guess you could say Ian Bell is like Brad Haddin but without the gloves.

Yes.

Paine's keeping has looked good at international level, but his FC record is not much more than OK. I think we should give him more time - he has plenty already.

Luke Ronchi is a destructive hitter, but woefully inconsistent with bat and gloves (he has looked good sometimes, but at other times he's looked terrible).

The likes of Matthew Wade need more time to develop, whereas I've only seen Chris Hartley in action a few times, so I can't comment.

As for Haddin, his batting is a little inconsistent, but he has played a few vital knocks here and there (vs SA and WI, for instance). His keeping has improved and whilst he rarely drops catches, he gives up more byes than he should. Still, he warrants his place.

I think Haddin keeping is Test standard, by the current standards atleast at home. But below test standard away from home. Though there is not many keepers who don't struggle keeping away from home conditions in their first couple seasons of International cricket.

With regard to the current Australian keepers. Manou is a better keeper, but I don't think any of the other keeper are better. Paine may have looked better during his short international stint. But overall his just FC standard at best. Hartley can be brillant, but awful in the same match. Wade solid but also still makes the odd error. Ronchi is just up and down like a yo-yo.

The ball hit the gloves so hard too, great job to hang on.

Btw, is there any footage of Haddin throwing his keeping gloves to stop a ball? I feel like watching it again.

Australia has a tradition for good to great wicket keepers. Brad Haddin is a blot on that. Its immaterial how good a batsman he is, his primary job is keeping. If this is the best he can do maybe Australia should ask Mr cricket to take up the gloves. It cant take his very long to get up to Haddin's level. Dravid didn't do a bad job as a front line batsman who "learnt wicket keeping" to a "chalta hai" (will do) level.

A strange and surprising post coming from you, given that his keeping has actually improved to a generally acceptable standard. He still needs to cut down on the byes, but he drops few catches (only the more difficult ones, if at all).

It's not like he's Kamran Akmal and he's certainly miles ahead of where Gilchrist was during his final season (where he dropped sitters galore).

A few other points:
1) The Dravid experiment was tried in ODI's only, not Tests. In other words, Dravid didn't have to keep for days on end. Also, Dravid was nothing more than an adequate keeper at best.

2) I don't even know whether Hussey's ever been a wicketkeeper.

3) Hussey's working his way back into form, so giving him the gloves and burdening him with more tasks is hardly appropriate.
