It was a horrible shot. Of course the captain should be having a word because it's absolutely pathetic. You think if he was playing for Australia they would just sit back and watch someone throw away their talent like he's doing?
I guess we will never ever stop complaining about Pietersen throwing his wicket away. He might very well be the most talented batsman in the world, only his 'flamboyancy'in the way of actually being the best test batsman. Otoh, we should not forget that the same characteristic that makes him throw away his wicket, might cause the runs he collects.

IMHO, it just great to see that some batsman are like Dravid and others are like Pietersen.

Well done 3rd umpire

Would have been a lot quicker if we had hot spot/snicko. As Jono said yesterday, complete farce.

Looked a correct decision in the end but it is infuriating that all the technology isn't available. Why bring in a new system if it is different in various parts of the world. The same for all or not at all.

Nah - better getting it right some of the time than none of the time.

How come it's not available everywhere btw?

I'm relieved 3rd Umpire called that one correctly; I really want Cook to make the most of all his scrappy, hard work.

Good news for your telly. Also good news for the referral system that piss poor decisions like that get overturned.
Yes, definitely. I wonder if on-field umpires are more inclined to give those decisions out when they aren't sure, hence allowing the batsman to effectively tell them if they hit it or not.

Well, we can yell at the Review System all we want, but this is imho what it is for: A dodgy decision is rightly overturned!

Duminy to Cook, no run, REVIEW Cook given out caught at short leg from a ball that spun into the pad, did it catch an inside edge? Cook doesn't think so. Replays suggest it came straight off the pad, but it's close to the inside edge. Is there enough evidence to overturn the decision? No Snicko and no HotSpot, the third-umpire is really considering this.... but given NOT OUT "

No Hotspot used here, unlike in Australia....

Maybe that's a good thing, since the umpires don't seem to want to pay attention to Hotspot when it suits them. After all, they ignored Hotspot in upholding Roach's dismissal in the Perth Test. Maybe they should just follow the example here in South Africa, and ignore Hotspot completely.

Slow session but very interesting and it belongs to England. To only lose 2 wickets was vital and being close to 200 gives us the platform to set up the game tomorrow. We just need to bat properly for another day and get a nice lead and then see if S.A. choke under pressure in the 2nd innings.

This is the danger time for Cook, once he gets to 60 he seems to switch off like Thorpe used to and gets out.Lets hope for Cooks sake he goes on and eases the stupid calls for his head.It is Bell who shouldn't be in the side as we need the 5th bowler.
Strikes me that Cook's doing what Strauss did about 18 months ago - cutting out as much risk as possible to ensure that he stays there. I'm fine with that. Also, he probably knew the importance of seeing off Steyn & Morkel at the start of the day, and that's pretty smart too. And his RR is up to 40 now, so he's going along quite nicely after the slow start.
I've seen about as much of the innings as you GIMH, and it is reminding me of that innings Andrew Strauss played in New Zealand, the 170odd. It was one of the scrappiest scores of 170 you're ever likely to see, but it's what got this current spell of form going. Hopefully Alastair will be able to put a similar 3 figure score on the board, gain confidence from that and start scoring consistent and convincing runs again.
Yeah, looking at his wagon wheel he seems to have scored about 8 on the offside, playing to his strengths for sure. Just hope he goes on with it as even when he's been in form (in 2008 he always seemed to bat well without ever getting past three figures) converting has been a problem.
Plenty of inaccurate statements going around IMHO. Cook was not 'out of form', nor does he have problems converting 50s to 100s. He was technically exposed for a consistent period of time following the Ashes in 2006/07- summer 2009 and scored runs on a dearth of extremely flat pitches during that time while failing to score when England needed him to score most.

However, as I stated last test match, it took me as much as 3 overs to tell that Cook's technique is much improved from the period mentioned above and I really hope that given his talent and the runs that might follow as a result of the effort put in by Gooch and Cook himself over the winter will not continue to be confused with the notion of him recovering form or starting to convert his scores (which is a ludicrous statement in the first place given the number of 100s he has at his age). I don't think that he has overcome all of his technical weaknesses but he certainly does look to be playing with a much straighter bat, closer to his body and also his body position is far more front on than it used to be in defense. This quite obviously increases his chances of scoring runs at the test match level.

We have seen some pretty ordinary bowling from South Africa this morning if you ask me. I did a count of the number of balls that Morne Morkel bowled on the stumps in his spell just before lunch and I counted about 3. I understand that he has a lot of attributes in his favor, but by bowling the lines and lengths he does he ends up taking bowled and lbw out of the equation and it hurts his statistics at the end of the day.

Harris consistently failed to bowl in the danger area to Cook, which involves making him drive on the off side, instead bowling either too short or allowing him to play on the leg side. Fair enough that Cook was playing anything on or around off stump on the leg side but it was still poor bowling.
