Oh yeah cool. In professional tennis, what ranked players normally play in Challengers?
Is there going to be some qualifying for the Challengers too?

Keen as old mate, I was almost going to add you to the Chennai draw but thought you might want a different preparation to your singles for the Australian Open.

Kao was up against it with Uzbek top seed Vagiz Ibrahimov handing him a 6-1, 6-4 tennis lesson. Kao was forced to come from a set down to beat local Marcelo Renato in his first match, and found the step up tough as the Uzbek player limited him to just two ranking points as he debuts on next week's rankings. Lawley meanwhile looked good in his first match as he beat Marcelo Ayoví 7-5, 6-3, but gave up a set lead in a long three-set loss to Spain's Alonso Fedrique.
First round action also claimed two West CWLanders as Jack Loughman lost to Giacomo Mazzoni 6-1, 0-6, 7-6(7) despite having two match points, and Pierre Rose went down fighting 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(5) to Ecuador's Jorge Andrés Mina.

The first round saw no activity from the big names in the draw as they enter the competition at the 2nd round hurdle.
- In the top half of the draw, Mat Mitchell of the CWLand Democratic Republic was hopeful of getting a win on the board against Azgin Erdi of Turkey, ranked 20 places below Mitchell. In a tight first set, the unforced error count was high - both competitors showing a fair sign of nerves at this early stage in the season. With the set delicately poised at 5 - 5, Mitchell dished up a double fault at 40 - 30 to take the game to deuce. An exceptional return from Erdi from a Mitchell first serve gave the Turk a break point, which he converted as Mitchell made another unforced error by hitting a return into the net. From that point on, Erdi didn't look back as he grew in confidence to win through 7 - 5, 6 - 1. Mitchell will take to the courts again tomorrow in the doubles with Matt Bre.
- Also in the top half of the draw, Richard Langley had a successful outing against higher ranked opposition in the form of Nikola Todorovski of FYRO Macedonia. Langley showed all the hallmarks of putting in a great deal of work on the practise courts in the off season as he prevailed in straight sets against his more experienced opponent. 7 - 5, 6 - 3
- Section 3 of the draw would prove interesting for the tennis fans of the former state of CWLand. In the first round, Marcuss Deane of the Federal Republic of CWLand took on the qualifier from Brazil, Carlos Toledo to win the right to take on 3rd seed, Matt Bre of the Democratic Republic of CWLand in the 2nd round. Against the hapless Brazilian qualifier, Deane romped through with a facile 6 - 2, 6 - 3 win which will stand him in good stead for the much tougher challenge of Bre.
- In the same section of the draw, new CWLand signing, Phoenix Wleft took to the courts after a very successful qualifying campaign. His opponent looked beatable - world number 213 Leonel Romero. However, Romero proved to be stiff opposition. Wleft took an early break against Romero, but the Chilean came back strongly to level the first set. The first set went to a tie breaker which again proved to be very evenly poised. A mini break with the score at 5 - 5 gave Wleft the opportunity to take the first set, and despite some dogged strokeplay from Romero, Wleft won the tie break 6 - 8. The will of Romero was broken, and he succombed 7 - 6 (8 - 6), 6 - 2. Wleft will face much tougher opposition in 14th Seed Samuel Thorpe in the next round.
