*Official* Sri Lanka in India

The Wheel is Forever
The sentiment in this thread seems to suggest otherwise.
Watching batting practice does not appeal to me. The question wasn't if there'll be a run, a wicket or a boundary this ball, it was whether there'll be a four or six this ball. Not entertainting, and certainly not a great showcase for cricket.

Lol. Aside from the fact that their batsmen played inconceivably well, crap performance.
Well we already know that India and SL have superb top orders. When you put them against utterly crap bowling and fielding on a flat pitch it's not surprising they made merry. To become quality ODI sides they will need a lot more than a strong top order though. I hope India doesn't become complacent after this. There is a lot of dead wood in this side.

What a game with fortunes changing almost every ball (though I didn't see it live) .... It's nice to see Ind win a close game after losing a few against the OZ

I wonder, how much has experience made its impact here. Zaheer and Nehra have played close to 200 ODIs between them, while Harbhajan is a veteran as well. On the other hand, the bottom five of Sri Lanka have collectively barely played as much as one of these. Even Tendulkar had a role in two of the last three dismissals. The mistakes made by the Lankans, particularly carrying the bat in the air while entering the crease, suggest that these are rookies, lightweights, who haven't spent much in the middle.

Looking at dropped catches and misfields by both teams, I wonder how much of it is due to the hard impact of the travelling ball. Virat's drop, for instance, was almost spontaneous, as it hit him very hard. Later on, after 'dropping' one difficult catch, Harbhajan was briefly injured trying to save a boundary. Both teams seem to fall apart when the opposition batting takes the attack to them, in bowling and fielding.

While Jimmy says that they should pick a team for ODIs with fielding being a basic requirement, we've seen Indian teams hold at least four misfits even as late as 2007, who are weak on the field. The surprising thing is that there are none in this team- every one of these is a good fielder, who's struggling right now. After all, a top fielder like Raina drops a catch or misses a direct hit. Do you drop him for that?

That apart, there are at least five players in this Indian squad, including a few in this XI itself, who don't deserve to be in the team, or even on the bench. Many of those dropped are a lot better than those passengers here. A lot of youngsters don't seem cut out for ODIs but somehow make it only because of youth or promise of potential, while two veterans pushing 30 have fantastic stats, but don't seem to be in contention for a place in the team. They need to look back at those cast aside- they can contribute a lot more- and stick to them for a long time.

There's a huge gap between the current Aus and SL teams. India should have owned this, but almost gave it away.

I wasn't watching most of this game. Aftr 34 overs, Sri Lanka was 290 some thing for 1 and I stopped following the score then. Sri Lanka really threw the match from that point (I see 3 run outs!). Sri Lanka would be pretty disappointed to have got this far but not being able to win the game.

There is really no 'should' in cricket. If there was then you wouldn't be required to play for 50 overs after you score 400+ .... You win when you hit the winning runs

I am not talking abt the quality (which is again debatable) but the fact that I am happy to see Ind win a close one after watching Ind lose a few against the OZ in the last series

Some comentators constantly bag the Indian fielding, each time a catch is dropped or there's one that slips under someone's arm. What about all those times when boundaries are saved, singles are snuffed into dots and a run-out is forced?

Because that is what you should merely expect from an international side.

Do we need bowlers in ODIs ? Why not just have bowling machines bowl 50 overs and play 11 batsmen ?

Nehra should commit suicide, reincarnate and commit suicide again. Was **** in 2003, is ****tier now.

I wouldn't be too concerned if I was Sri Lanka because they have got a third tier ragtag bowling line-up out there but India's attack is Bhaji or nothing at the moment. He should have got MOTM. Don't want to take anything away from Sehwag or Dilshan but having a S/R of 120+ was par for the wicket, bowling 10 overs for less than 60 wasn't.

What a pathetic cricket match. It was like a boring 1500 page thriller suddenly brought to life in the last page by a twist.

Yep. I was really proud of Harbhajan yesterday. That ball to get Dilshan was a beaut.

lol.. how crappy are our bowlers?

a little less crappier than sl bowlers. so u should be ok for this series.
This is the best that India can offer now. Zaheer, Harbhajan and Nehra are hardly spring chickens, while the visitors' bowling depends a lot on Dilhara Fernando and a little less on KMDN. They did very well to pull things back in the final overs, when the middle-overs were given away. The bowlers may have their problems, but they're lightyears ahead of the part-time bowlers of this team- who were so weak, the whole team had to cover for them. They have to have five proper bowlers (specialist or otherwise, but no amateurs or half-baked picks), especially two spinners, to have an advantage over SL.

Less said of the SL selection for the game, the better. They often field good bowling attacks, but having Matthews and Sanath as full-fledged bowlers on a flat deck was a very bad idea. They did well to take risks with their part-timers, but it backfired.

I am not sure why we are not playing Ojha. I am sure he would do much better than Nehra.
He can't bat or field too well. Nehra is, for all his problems, a lot more experienced, and has done well since recall, though his record after the Champions Trophy has been quite dire. Ideally, neither should be there.
