World Tour Finals I

American top seeds land World Tour crown

There were no upsets on offer on the final day of the ATP season as top seeds Jason Hall and Hugh James & Ralph Robinson claimed the singles and doubles titles respectively in New York. In the day's earlier match, an anticipated showdown between Hall and Radivoj Daneu was a fizzer as the World No. 1 shot further ahead of the pack on the rankings board with a 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 win over the top Serbian player. Daneu had lost just one match this week - also against Hall - and was again unable to really trouble the top seed as Hall effortlessly accounted for Daneu in straight sets. After pulling a Houdini in the semi finals, Hall looked keen on making his chances count and surged to an eighth title of the season to deny Daneu a fairytale win. Daneu, meanwhile, will look to finish his season off on a high as the Davis Cup final begins this Friday in Belgrade.

In the men's doubles final, fourth seeds Jefferson Drake & Martti Korpinen could not upstage the world's top pair as the French Open champs James and Robinson prevailed in three. With the match tiebreaker done away with for the final, Drake and Korpinen managed to overturn a one-set deficit to send the match to a decider as they earned a rare break of the Robinson service. But the steel showed by the top seeds was evident, and they broke early in the third set to unsettle the fourth seeds before clinging onto their slim lead to secure a 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 win.

  • Jefferson Drake showed some jetlag in his first match at the CWLand Championships, but did enough to escape with a win over Rick Langley. The World No. 256 stunned the second seed by taking the first set 7-5, before Drake found some rhythm just in time and came back to claim what was ultimately a straightforward 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 win. In the other Blue Group match, Jarkko Maxum gave up a one-set lead against Spas Delev to lose his opener in three. The seventh seed was always going to be up against it against Delev who returned to form with a final in Seoul, and failed to make the most of his early lead as Delev attacked his way to an attractive 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 win.
  • In the Purple Group, fourth seed Jojo Mustard survived a second set revival from Martti Korpinen to take his first win 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-4. Korpinen put up a really strong display despite having played most of his tennis in the doubles arena this year, but the fourth seed just had a bit too much polish as he took a win over his doubles rival thanks to a late break of serve. In the other match, Jamee Hancianu moved a step towards the quarter finals as he smashed thirteenth seed Randy Banks in a confident display 6-4, 6-1.
  • In the Red Group, a Sven Oxenstierna was greeted with a huge ovation by his adopted country as he returned home following his World Tour Finals semi with an easy win. Despite only arriving in Edfield yesterday, Oxenstierna had little trouble accounting for Matt Bre in the Red Group's second match; moving to top of the table with a 6-2, 6-3 win.

* Deane lost to Rivers, not Smeltz.

Needed the win over Delev there, Will have to regroup and spring a massive upset over Drake to have a chance at qualifying you'd think. Hoping that Langley is spent, though nlooking good taking a set off drake.

  • The CWLand Championships have had their first real boilover as one of the tournament favourites Randy Smeltz was beaten by Scotland Rivers in the Green Group. Smeltz had little trouble in dispatching Bowenburg on Sunday, but faced a stiffer test in the form of the World No. 79 who came out of Sunday hardened after a tight match. Smeltz took the first set off of Rivers with a big break of service midway through the set despite spending most of it on the backfoot. But Rivers was not pertubed, and continued to press Smeltz before finally receiving a big payout for his hard work as he surged to a stunning 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 boilover. He looks almost a certainty to move through to the quarter finals, but Rob Bowenburg ensured he still had a glimmer of hope as he eased past Marcuss Deane in straight sets. Showing that Sunday's capitulation was an exception to the rule rather than the rule itself, Bowenburg played much more consistent tennis in his 6-1, 7-6(6) win over Deane who, despite a big serve, hasn't been able to get the job done late in sets this week.
  • The Red Group saw a battle between the top seed and fifth seed, and it was Sven Oxenstierna who was the beneficiary of a wasteful opponent in his 7-6(7), 4-6, 6-4 win over Heath Davis. Much like Oxenstierna blew a big lead in the semis in Flushing Meadows on Saturday, Davis found himself with a massive set point at 7-6 in the first set tiebreaker. Oxenstierna however survived a big first serve from the doubles star, and showed the same back-to-the-wall spirit that earned him a Grand Slam final as he came back to the take the set. Davis kept pressing to take the second, but quickly found himself in a world of trouble at a double break down and 0-4 in the third and final set. He staged a brief fightback and had a glimmer of causing a massive boilover, but Oxenstierna asserted himself to hold serve finally and seal passage through to the quarter finals. In the other fixture, Matt Bre got on the board with a first win as he defeated Mat Mitchell in three sets. In a tense affair, Bre was the player who came up tops by bouncing back from a disappointing loss to Oxenstierna to account for Mitchell 6-3, 6-7(2), 7-5. Mitchell looked in good touch at 5-5 in the third set, but failed on service to hand Bre a chance to serve for the match; an opportunity the youngster took with both hands.

  • Despite his shaky start on Monday, second seed Jefferson Drake joins old rival Sven Oxenstierna in this weekend's quarter finals of the CWLand Championships after he easily accounted for Spas Delev. The ninth seed was riding a wave of elation following an upset of sorts on Monday, but couldn't make an impression on the now settled World No. 11. Drake showed glimpses of his best despite being at the tailend of a lengthy season, and blazed away after a close start to secure a 7-5, 6-2 win. Seventh seed Jarkko Maxum kept his slim quarter finals hopes alive earlier by ending Rick Langley's week in three. The gutsy Langley showed he has a future in CWLand tennis as he again took the first set 7-6. However, much like against Drake on Monday, he could not earn a Blue Group win and allowed Maxum to play his way back into form for a 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-2 win. Maxum's path to qualification is simple: he must beat Drake on Friday and then hope Langley finally pulls through for a victory against Delev.
  • The Purple Group is more open, though, after Jojo Mustard moved to 2-0 with his second straight set win of the week. In a battle between the two top seeds of the group, Mustard moved to the verge of qualification as he overcame a horror start to account for Jamee Hancianu 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. Hancianu blazed away with the first set in under half an hour, but was reeled in quickly by one half of the CW Open doubles champions who found his range and controlled proceedings with a three-set win. A win against thirteenth seed Randy Banks on Friday will ensure he finished top of the group despite Banks giving his quarter finals hopes a boost with a big 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 over Martti Korpinen. For the second time in a row, Korpinen was beaten in three sets as the energetic Banks atoned for his Tuesday belting by playing fine tennis in the third set. Banks requires big results to go his way on Friday to make it to the weekend; his losing head-to-head record against Hancianu meaning the sixth seed must lose to Korpinen and he must defeat Mustard, or he must take a straight sets win over Mustard regardless of the Hancianu result to oust Mustard on Set W-L. Mustard, for obvious reasons, will be looking to stop that from happening.

Incredibly disappointing to lose, Hopefully I can come back with a win over Hancianu.. Good to see Drake performing solidly.

Actually happy to avoid the green group now. Clearly some in-form players there.

Lucky to get past Davis...put up a good fight.

Bowenburg needs a straight sets win pretty much?

I think I'm gone unless Smeltz losses.

Even if I win 6-0, 6-0 that will only take me to 26 matches won which will not be enough. it's not done on for and against is it?

Goes by "percentage of sets won" first. Then games.

So you'll have 4-2 and Rivers 4-3.

(btw, the top two go through)
