I like the look of Watling, very compact player and defends the ball nicely.
Agree with that, the selectors obviously saw something in his technique as opposed to judging him purely on his FC average. Apart from a couple of needless flirts outside off stump against Aamer, looked pretty solid & was busy between the wickets.

It was the most promising 13 I have seen in a while. If I were the pakistanis I would talk about those flirts outside the off stump tonight and target him tomorrow.

Fascinating last hour of play watching our openers in action.

If Watling and McIntosh get the extra 3 runs, when was the last time two New Zealand openers put on 50 for the first wicket? Would of been a while. That's just off the top of my head.

14th highest opening partnership for us in the last 3 years, and rising.

Combinations in the past 3 years. **** me, bring back How 'n' Redmond.

According to NZT's list, it was October 2008 v Bangladesh, and before that in May 08 vs England.

NZ have proved that they were the more focused team, more hungry for the series win and thats why they are in this position. While Pakistan's captain, doesnt realize that apart from selecting players, placing fielders and showing up for the toss, he also has to go out and score runs, plenty of them.

Well done NZ...this is a pretty good wicket for batting and the openers have given them the start they needed.
Pakistan only have themselves to blame for this kind of insipid batting. Their misery is self inflicted.

Mohammad Yousuf was telling Waqar they thought it would be a real challenge to get him out, or something along those lines.
I believe you. I just find it incredible that anyone following international cricket could have a high opinion of him or be worried about him.

That said he looked ok today. He will have trouble first thing in the morning until he gets his eye in again. But if he can get through that who knows what is possible for him tomorrow.

It wasn't about getting him out it was about their fear that if McIntosh got going they would be unable to dislodge him. That he was the danger man that would be able to put the foundations down for a huge NZ score. McIntosh practically sets up camp on the pitch when hes spent a bit of time there.

It was based on the tour game where he made a 130 odd not out, proves they hadn't watched any footage

Just watched the highlights. Wonderful bowling by the Kiwis, but I think our batsmen could've applied themselves a bit more. Excellent slip catching as well. Hoping our bowlers can make some inroads early this morning.

A bit? Only Misbah out of the Pak top order was got out, the rest got themselves out/were exposed on a flat wicket albeit one that had some pace and bounce. They ended up 200 runs short of par and New Zealand should bat them out of the game.

How does Mohammad Aamer bat 8?

I have not seen much of him before today so I cant say for sure how well he bats but I have not seen anyone 'look' so bad that didnt bat 10 or 11.
