The CW 50 - CricketWeb's view of the top 50 cricketers of all time

I've cobbled one together and sent it off now.

Realised I'd omitted a certain Spitfire-piloting Aussie allrounder from my first draft, so probably just as well I lost it.

Ok, here's a question for everyone - if there end up being tied players who can't be separated either by points or number of nominations, how would you like it handled? We could either decide them by short battles between the tied players, or we could just list them as tied.
Leave them as tied IMO.

Yeah, AWTA, if they've tied they've tied, no point trying to manufacture anything

Bowl-out, IMHO.

Nah, number of nominations for me. Rewards players there's more of a consensus on.
The last time I checked there were ties, so I'd be surprised if there still weren't at least one or two.

Ok, well unless there are any last minute votes to come in (like literally in the next minute) I'm prepared to call the votes closed.

Thanks so much to all who voted, the response was greater than I was expecting - nearly 40 of you contributed, and a grand total of 109 different cricketers were nominated for at least one vote.

Final votes being tallied now, but the good news is that there are no ties that can't be seperated by volume of nominations, so we'll have a straight ranking with no tiebreakers or equal ranks. :)

Oh awesome :)
When can we expect the first set of players? Worth staying up for? Or would you suggest tomorrow??

Hmmm, I'll try to get the first list out tonight but I can't promise - if it isn't tonight it will definitely be as soon as I can tomorrow.

As a taster, here is a team of players who I personally think would be competitive against most who have ever taken the field:

Matthew Hayden
Gordon Greenidge
Peter May
Javed Miandad
Frank Woolley
Tony Greig
Monty Noble
Jack Blackham
Alec Bedser
Andy Roberts
Bishan Bedi

Quite a line-up. What do they all have in common? Not one of them received a single vote from anyone.

And for Bishan Bedi, read "any Indian spinner not named Kumble or Mankad."

That does not surprise me at all..We only had 25 toplaywith and over 100 years of the game...probably if there was atop 50 then at least Blackham,Noble Bedser, and May would have made my lists

Andy Roberts is a surprising omission. SJS is a huge fan I believe- I don't think he's been around, but I'm pretty sure he'd have made at least one list if he had been.

Yeah, Roberts is the one that most surprises me. Reckon you'd get a fair few players from the 70s nominating him.

at least one should have voted for javed miandad. great player. guess we dont have too many pakistani posters afterall.

cant believe no one voted for hayden. but it shows once again that sean's original observation, that CW posters are knowledgeable, is bang on
