The CW 50 - CricketWeb's view of the top 50 cricketers of all time

Finalising my list now. No doubt some of my nominations or the order I put them in will be questioned.
Got my own way of picking this list though :p

Yes and Ian Botham at 11! I really wouldn't set too much store by that. I expect Grace to be either 2nd or 3rd in our CW poll.
There is absolutely no way Grace is going to be 2nd or 3rd here. I'm pretty sure he'll be completely left out of quite a few lists, including mine. Probably the same reason why he ended up 14th in the ESPN list. And that was compiled by cricketers and writers (?) themselves, not random dudes on an internet forum like us.

Will make the top 10 I think, seems that people either have him near the top or they or they have left him out entierly.

Bradman, Grace and Sobers are three of my top five. But once you get beyond that, the other seven of my top ten are bowlers or bowling all-rounders.

Keith Miller was one of my criminal admissions due to forgetfulness- the other was probably even more criminal, I'm too ashamed to even say, but you can figure it out.
Warne?

Grace is not in my list of 25, let alone top 5.
Haha, unlikely mate. Shane Warne's my favourite cricketer ever.

It's arguably even worse than leaving out him, though.

Just checked my 25 against the complete list posted earlier in this thread, only one name hadn't been picked then. Wonder if he's still yet to be nominated.

Edit : Sent. Happy with my list (I think) would've liked to have one or two players a little higher as I don't think they get all the credit they deserve. Couldn't justify having them above any of the players above them though.

The ESPN one was for the 20th Century only. With that criteria it is possible to justify Grace being outside the top 10. Our list is not limited to a defined time period and in my opinion for Grace to be outside the top 3 in our list would be embarrassing.

So there's your answer, Joe. In the list "compiled by cricketers and writers themselves", for which you seem to have a lot of respect, WG Grace aged 51 and over gets in at number 14. So how can a "random dude on an internet forum" leave him out of the top 25 even when you can take into account his astonishing performance in the last 3 decades of the 19th Century?

(your choice, obviously, but please).

Pretty impressive from Grace given he played his last Test match in 1899 :)

Didn't nominate Grace as he wouldn't have a chance against the modern battery of fast bowlers - Sami, Mpofu, Harmison et. al.

countdown? that is damn good sean. i was expecting the list staight up. but countdown is a very interesting idea. will involve more discussions and i would love to hear more from other guys. you are a showman, dude
Ha ha thanks mate. I'm thinking of doing 50-41, then 40-31, then 30-21, then 20-11 each in blocks (maybe one day after the other). And then count down the top 10 one at a time.

Ready to post the list?
Very soon, have got the final couple of lists that have been sent in today that I haven't had the chance to collate yet. Will do asap and then we'll get this party started.

Really shouldn't have started a new job while I had important stuff like this still outstanding.

Hey Sean, without mentioning any names is there anyone in the top 25 currently tied on points?

I'm looking forward to the countdown, expecting pie graphs too :p
The last time I checked there were ties, so I'd be surprised if there still weren't at least one or two.

Ok, here's a question for everyone - if there end up being tied players who can't be separated either by points or number of nominations, how would you like it handled? We could either decide them by short battles between the tied players, or we could just list them as tied.

I was going to do vote, but my webmail crashed and took the list I'd spent half an hour compiling with it. CBA to do it again.
