Why should that matter? Tsostsobe looked impressive on the other hand in his Aus debut and has continue to be ignored. Whats more is a guy like albie looked far worse and continued to make the team.

Philander plays for the cobras at newlands which is most certainly not known as a place where there is assistance for fast bowlers.
Pro isn't a fast bowler, Newlands is a perfect track for him as it plays like a subcontinent wicket so medium pacers who bowl stump-to-stump are rewarded. If Pro worked on his batting, lost weight and learnt to catch then he would be a better selection than McLaren, as Philander is more reliable for getting ten overs out of.

Did well in his debut series against India but lets not forget he was demoted to amateur cricket only a few weeks back.

As i said i refuse to believe he is test quality. I dont want to see him in an ENG shirt & his FC record clearly is massive abberation since he clearly is better than non of those bowlers in most conditions...
Well yes you do keep saying this, but on what evidence? As NUFAN established you claimed last to have seen him at OT in Sept 07, and yet you have admitted in another thread that you haven't watched any county cricket at OT since 2006. Perhaps you saw him in a dream in Sept 2007, and he underperformed?

I've never wanted a play to succeed so much if he plays.
Though it would clearly idicate frailties in South Africa's batting unit rather than Davies being a good bowler

There is of course, the point that we played Durham at Blackpool in September 2007:laugh:

I don't even think it matters if he did see him in a First Class game in 2007, tbh. What he's actually done in a career spanning 77 First Class games means infinitely more than what aussie saw in one game, or three games, or whatever it was.

All FC form in England does not always equal international success. Some people wish not accept this hardcore fact.

While all First Class form may not equate to international success, it certainly has a lot more chance of doing so than just basing selection on watching someone play three games and guessing.

Well its not as if anybody here would have seen Davies bowl in all of his 77 FC games. It is very possible to see a player once/few times & say "yea he is class, he will be international quality/or will represent the national side one day".

I struggle to believe anyone can say that based on seeing Davies bowl nor can explain how he is a better pick than Bresnan as back-up to the injured Anderson of Sidebottom.

Who, Monty?

Davies is in Pretoria but isn't playing domestic cricket unless you count the odd game against a few guys from Soweto. On that, encouraging to see a cricketer by the name of Mokena scoring heavily against the England performance side. Mokena was rewarded for that with a professional gig where he subsequently tore into Paul Harris and Imran Tahir.
No, I meant Davies but I'd got it wrong. I'd read that he was palying and taking wickets but missed the fact that he was palying for England's development side or whatever they're called now.

Agreed. Reading through this I can't see what the problem is?

Yea but some players you just know, like Ewen Thompson for example. I've watched plenty of players in domestic cricket that have gone onto play for New Zealand and known they would do jack at the top level, Lance Hamilton is a perfect example although he wasn't really given much of a chance.

Haha pick CD players, subtle. :p

Yeah you can tell in some cases. Tim McIntosh and James Marshall are other good examples.

Then there are the ones that surprise you, like Martin and O'Brien.

My point is watching a whole three games or whatever Aussie managed...hmm

It's also possible that the selectors have seen him play on a number of times, called him into development squads and the like and seen him in training etc. and decided he is actually worth a call up.

Mind you, that's far too much like what's actually happened to be right, clearly you know a lot more about him on your limited (and dare I say it fabricated) evidence.

Yes but Davies isn't just another player. It would be like an opener averaging 55 in your domestic FC competition and not being picked.

I'm tending to believe Davies is a first class "myth". Be interested to see how he gets on because whenever I've seen him albeit in limited overs cricket he was useless.
Yeah, that's not unusual for a bowler like Davies though. Check out the List A record of Mohammad Asif- and if you've been watching the series in New Zealand, you'll agree that he's still one of the best bowlers going.

We actually have someone on the forum who's faced the guy. I'm trying to dig his posts out but can't find them :(.
