**Official** Pakistan in New Zealand (3 tests)

straw man

So Elliott was picked for this test as a specialist batsman?
Yes. Based on good ODI performances and lack of other options he was the best remaining candidate.

Franklin, Ryder and Redmond not considered due to injury. Oram and Styris retired, Broom failing repeatedly.

True. So who are our options? Looking at who batted 3 in this round of the Plunket Shield...

T.Astle
A.Kitchen
S.Haig
B.Patton
N.Parlane
M.Parlane

Oh dear. The cupboard's a bit bare, isn't it? Kitchen and Patton could turn out to be Test class, but I definitely wouldn't go for them yet.
Kitchen actually looks like a good prospect, Patton meh too old

An opener playing at 3 perhaps?
Well it's not like you have openers coming out your eyeballs either given your current two are a man without a First Class hundred and a 29-year-old who averages 33 in First Class cricket with the footwork of a corpse.

I think this discussion has shown why Flynn has to stay, really. He's far from great at the moment but he hasn't really disgraced himself so far in Test cricket and unless you want to put someone like Sinclair or Fulton in at 3, no-one else has a case for being better.

And Flynn isn't a test number three. Broom will have far more success then anyone else that actually bats at three for their domestic team.
I wouldn't bring Broom in just yet, bringing him at 3 at this stage of his career after so many failures could ruin the lad.

Yeah, definitely, but at least a year away from being ready IMO. Bringing him in now would have Ken Rutherford-esque results.

Would probably go with Fulton, Sinclair dare I say it may even be in line for a recall untill Ryder and Franlin are fit. As for openers Watling seems to be around the team.

Also Cumming would probably go alright at 3, keeps him away from the new ball bouncer to a small extent and he was never that dreadful.

Heh, so he does. He only has one though and his average is 28 so my point stands - he's being picked on potential alone rather than performance because you don't have anyone else.

You know after Flynn got out on Day 1, I was thinking, 'bring back Sinclair'.

Same can be said of the debut of pretty much every single player we have.
