His record is amazing as it is for a player from his era. People often mis-read Crowe's record because they compare it with the zillion players to average 50+ in the last 10-15 years.

If you get a chance, do a cricinfo filter of all batsman for the period between Jan 1985 - Dec 1994 and I think you'll find he performed as well as any other batsman in the world in that 10 year block.
Crowe wins

Thats a pretty amazing stat actually.

I think being put in to bat that even finishing the day 6 wickets down would be an excellent effort. Hoping we can make a big total here.
Yeah I am quietly pleased with 270/6. I have seen far worse batting displays in my time.

And one of the terrible top three came to the party with a 50. It seems unfair to lump Guptil in with Mcintosh and Flynn but in reality in tests he is yet to distinguish himself. Lets hope this is the first of several 50s for this tour.

Imran farhat has dropped to catch so far.. i bet he is going to drop more catches than he would make runs in this match.. i wonder why they didn't play khalid latif..

Its not being used in the India vs Sri Lanka series because India refused to use it - South Africa has also announced their disapproval of it so I doubt you'll see it being used in the South Africa vs England test series either.

Yup, thought he was there or thereabouts. That's why it annoys me when people automatically assume that any recent batsman with a 50+ average is better than Crowe. Such comments need perspective.

I'm sure if you did the same filter for bowlers, Hadlee & Marshall would dominate

You have a good eye. I thought otherwise until the replay.
Hmmm,
Imho, the difficulty with LBW decision is the direction movement of the ball, after the bounce. It can be so hard to 'predict' if the ball would have hit the stumps..... But, when judging the impact was outside the line of off, one has to observe a relatively static moment. Apperently, Taufel was convinced it hit the McCullum inside the line. And that's just the point: How can an umpire be convinced of something that didn't happen? I can see that happening with something unobservable (direction of the ball after bounce), but hardly when judging the point of impact.....

Waqar dominates followed closely by Hadlee and Marshall.

Yeah Crowe is underrated, but I think that's more to do with the lack of mentioning of his name in the media rather than his stats.

If Crowe were talked about more like he is by Akram, or at least publicly so, he'd get the recognition he deserves.

Look at Viv's rep, and a lot of it is because of how his contemporaries comment about how good he was so often. The opinion of Crowe is also very favourable by bowlers who bowled to him. Problem is it doesn't receive the attention/exposure.

Off topic, but Sachin's stats in that time period too are phenomenal.

Yeah thats the problem with stats and New Zealand, we have no choice but to pick quality players before they are ready. McCullum would proberbly be in only his second year if he ws Australian for example.

Did India really refuse to use it or was it because of the disagreement about who will foot the bill for them.

Ind33d. My favorite to watch (whatever I can) at the moment.
It's crazy that he is only a kid and not yet (in all Western countries, and probably the same in Pakistan and every where else) legally an adult. I just only hope the pressure and expectation doesn't get too much for him. I remember when Irfan Pathan came in, a lot of people were talking him up as the next Wasim Akram, and look were Pathan is now (ie not in the Pakistan team). I hope they take it easy with Aameer for the next few years and keep his head in the right place and his feet well and truely on the ground.

My take on day 1. Disappointing that Guptill and Taylor threw their wickets away when they were going so well. Especially taylor for flashing at a wide one when he didn't need too. He got a lot plaudits for being so patient early on, too bad he couldn't do that when he was in the 90's. And the same for Guptill, he really needs to be told that he either plays it well or doesn't play it all, I know he scored a six, but really if Gul had been on the rope, it woud of been a dolly. Pakistan didn't really look like getting either of them out. Although credit shouldn't be taken away from both of them, they played very well, and in Guptill's case, he finally got a 50, and hopefully he can take confidence from it. McIntosh should really have been more aware, and not waiting for an easy ball outside off, and with regards to Flynn, when Ryder gets fit, unless Flynn does something, I suggest dropping Flynn back to Northern Distrcits for a spell. He is so out of form ATM.

Fulton made a start, but it is evident that confidence is something he is lacking at Test level, he can obviously bat, he isn't some random from domestic cricket, like the West Indies were doing in their "Test" series against Bangladesh when all their good players went on strike. He looked like he was starting to settle and played a few good shots, but it was his lack of movement in his feet that was his undoing. Somebody needs to convince him to bat for New Zealand like he does for Canterbury, and keep doing what he was doing to get re-called. He is in form, just needs some help mentally at Test level. As for Elliot, well he has to do something to prove he is worthy of a spot. I don't understand why he can't score runs at Test level against the same bowlers, but in the ICC Champions Trophy, he had no problems against the same bowlers (obviously Asif was not there), they are the same bowlers regardless. I guess it is another mental thing.

These commentators are having such a whine about the review system. Fair play for not just taking the New Zealand line, but they're missing the point that a wrong (if only slightly) decision was reversed to a right one. Fair point about the incomplete evidence, but it definitely hit him outside the line regardless.

A very good day of test match cricket unlike the India SL match played on another dead pitch.
Thats why I have no time for test cricket in the subcontinent. The sub standard pitches and dull draws in the region with the majority of cricket fans is the chief reason for the decline of test cricket
