CD lead by 124 now. Still shouldn't be a problem for ND on a pitch that I assume must have flattened out, and given CD's attack aren't the most penetrative (and seems to rely totally on Mason and Thompson). Still you never know.
Praying for an ND collapse.

Congrats to Bracewell for his 60 and Aldridge for 11 wickets

Consider our three post Fleming number threes: James Marshall, Jesse Ryder and Daniel Flynn.

James Marshall is roughly the same age as Patton and barely averages 30 in FC cricket

Ryder deserved his run there.

Flynn had one good season and was in the right place at the right time.

In an ideal world Patton would be left to play for NZ A for a bit, but considering previous selectorial history and the fact that its highly unlikely Fulton or especially Sinclair will be chosen (someone to dig this post when one of them is) then its between Todd, who is solid, Parlane, who is in the same boat but older and possibly lesser, or a converted opener. Patton probably has a chance and if picked the reasons why would be perfectly understandable. Showed great promise in the few games he's played and the other options need slightly better records.

I'd be a lot happier with the number three process if Flynn kicked on, Patton had played 20-30 games, Todd had a slightly better record and Fulton went back to his 2007 self.

Actualy, I'd be even happier if Sinclair had transferred all these domestic scores to test cricket. :p
If Northern Districts had any sense Kane Williamson would be batting at three this season, he's New Zealand's future number three. Flynn and co are just keeping it warm for him

Where's Sherlock these day's? And Marc Calkin isn't much of a bowler tbh, he looked very tame to say the least in the 20/20's.
Auckland.

And no, I don't really want Calkin outside of 20/20s. Diamanti does the medium pace bowling allrounder job better.

Is he actualy a fair dinkum number three? I know he opened in the U-19 semi vs India but has played his FC career at 4-6.

Yeah Williamson not being given the opportunity at number three ahead on Devcich could hamper his future a bit if NZ want him at three.

I dunno if that's true - the other spot that he could be aiming for in the BCs would be number 6.

If he's going to be a number 3 then agree he should definitely bat 3 for ND. Not 4 or 5.

I'd have both in NZ A. Way to misread me.

Watling might bat three but he'll probably open if McIntosh fails
Fulton and Sinclair...dunno whether the selectors would go back there
Cumming would be another candidate for McIntoshs spot
Elliott won't bat number three
Williamson might have to as Taylor and Ryder occupy his current ND spots.
Flynn is the incumbent.
Patton isn't even batting 3 for CD...

Yeah he's a proper number three. He batted at three while at school, he batted at three when he played for the ND age group teams, he batted at three when he was 16 for the New Zealand under 19 team against India in the three test matches, and he made his debut for ND at three.

I think there's something on cricinfo (might of been the paper though) where he said it was weird not coming in early last season because he had done it is whole life.

Thats because we're trying to fit all our batting in the side by the looks of it.

Last year Patton played at three. This year its hard to say whether he'll be able to again with three openers in the top order.

Bt the way in the Invitation XI vs Pakistan we're struggling a bit with Pakistan 63/1. Tuffey and Southee at least kept it tight (9 overs for 15 and 10 overs 1/27 respectively) but O'Brien has already given away 18 off 3 overs.

I'm thinking more and more that Bond will probably play in the first test, so the three above are fighting for just one spot.

And Arnel has just picked up his first wicket. I still think O'Brien will play, but I wouldn't mind seeing Arnel get a run.
I think Arnel will get a run at some stage, but it won't be until a couple of Martin, Bond & O'Brien are injured or retire.

If anyone is to leapfrog O'Brien for the first test it will be Tuffey or Southee IMO. I've been thinking it would be O'Brien as the deserving incumbent but if the other two outbowl him by a long way here I wouldn't be surprised if the selectors go for one of them.

Edit: Shouldn't forget though that with Bond in the team we're going to want someone to bowl a lot of overs with the older ball - O'Brien still fits the bill for that (and Martin will do some) but that would seem to be Southee's weakness.

Reckon if O'Brien misses out then Tuffey will get the nod. To be honest from what i've seen of late i'd be quite happy for Tuffey to get the call.
