Because average NZ batsman who haven't played much international cricket won't have seen decent leg spin?

They're not utterly dreadful against the new ball, but they've not great either. Taylor gets lbw trapped in front or edges behind, and Ryder is not overly keen on moving his feet.

In general though, pretty much anyone is more vulnerable to the new ball than a ball that's 30-40-50 overs old, so since those two are relied on to score the bulk of our runs we should give them as much chance as possible of doing that. Therefore I'm happy with 2 out of our top 3 being stonewallers. Whether that's McIntosh and Flynn or Cumming and Watling I'm not too fussed - whoever is playing the best at the time.

Don't think we should go for a revolving door policy personally. We've tried that :p

I'm really unsure on our openers. I doubt Watling will succeed immediately, he and Guptill will star in many partnerships of 60-70/0 before NZ ending up 80/2 for at least this summer.

Cumming is probably in the same boat.

Brodie is having a good start to his career but he has to prove himself over a longer period imo.

I don't rate McIntoshs chances of staying in the side.

It's now make or break time for Flynn. He's either going to kick on or get dropped. I personally think it will be the latter. I suspect in several years he'll be a consistent quality player on the domestic scene and for NZ A though and with any luck, depending on what our next number three(s) does, he'll make a return to the NZ top order a better player.

Sam Wells finishing with 5/75. Michael Mason gets 5/93 and Ewen Thompson 3/59 as ND are all gone for 279.

This is where things get interesting. Ingram, How and Patton have the chance to do well against a quality young bowler in Boult, a good domestic bowler in Scott, and an in form Aldridge and Yovich.

That was Jono Boult's highest FC score to, looks like he didn't trust his brother too much though :laugh:

Boult will rip right through this weak CD batting line-up :)

Pretty much agree, especially on Flynn. While predicting that he'll get dropped this summer, if he manages to cross 50 here against Pakistan I think he's guaranteed himself a spot for the first test and probably the whole series.

Brodie and others like him should be left well alone for a couple of years - the selectors have made it pretty clear that Watling is next in line now anyway.

I also think leave McIntosh in the side for now, but he's certainly skating on thin ice. If he's dropped there's no way he'll play another test.

Edit: And then I'd have to change my avatar :( Look at the beautiful technique in that half-forward prod.

I'd hate to see what you think of everyone elses then :p

Wish Patton and Worker had swapped possies. Patton will be a strong contender for that test match number three spot if it comes up imo.

Really want Flynn to start scoring consistently this series. One fifty shouldn't be enough to save him this time round like it has before.

Young would bat 3 like he did last season. Though if he isn't there (like in this game) it would probably be Kitchen.

Thats who it was. I was trying to remember who did it last season, was thinking Jones with McIntosh, Guptill and Raval being shuffled through the opening spots.
