I nearly took Ling when I took Kane, but in the end Kane does a similar job but is more versatile (through midfield, that is, I realise Ling can go forward but I hardly need more presence up top) and has better disposal. Plus, he's not a ranga and isn't Cameron Ling.

Bucking the trend of taking a backup ruckman on the bench, with Merrett being a more than capable backup in the ruck if required, and Schwarz an able CHF.

No way you'd reconsider that is there Zac? . It's like you're trying to gut me in this draft. Had Millane penciled in for my team since about round three, but again dumbly figured given his vintage and too short span he'd slip. Wrote his name down before deciding to take Ling and going back to change it.

At the start pf the 1991 season, I decided as only a 12 year old can that Peter Daicos was no longer my favourite, it was now Darren Millane. Such a good player, so hard at it. When picking his alltime Collingwood team circa 96, Daicos selected Millane alone out of his contemporaries in the starting 18. He was only 26 when he died - his death definitely produced a big shift in attitudes to drink driving in Melbourne. By that time he'd played in a premiership - near best on ground despite playing with a broken bone in his hand for the whole final series. He'd won a best and fairest and had another two top three finishes. He was also an all-Australian, and won the AFLPA MVP award in 1990. Upon his death Collingwood retired the number 42.

It was the 18th anniversary of his death on the 7th of October. For me, that day in 1991 is like the Kennedy shooting was supposed to have been or like 9/11, in that I recall EXACTLY where I was an what I was doing when I heard he died. I missed the next day of school.
