Before the series starts I thought I'd get a prediction in - Styris to underwhelm with the bat.

Yes I think he's been poorly treated by the selectors and should have been in the ODI team/ squad a while back, and yes I'm pleased he is in the squad considering he is experienced and we have injury problems.

But he hasn't racked up many runs in recent memory, either domestically or in his couple of 20/20 innings for Deccan. Plus he's 34 or 35 now IIRC, with a dodgy knee. I imagine he'll be in the playing XI and will need to score a fair few runs to convince the selectors he's not past it (after they clearly concluded that a year or two ago for some reason).

Hope piggy proves me wrong of course ;)

When Styris selfishly retired from Test cricket he gave up his right to be in the side on a regular basis, IMO.

He never got that high in New Zealand I'm pretty sure and in his latest outings he was low 130s.
Wrong ....Southee often reached between 136-142 in his early spells, was only in his 2nd to 3rd spells (particular in tests) that he hovered around the low 130's

Why would he need to work on speed? His speed - when he was fresh - was around 135-140km/h, thats plenty quick enough for a swing bowler. Southee's issues were he got tired very quickly, and once that happened his speeds dropped and he stopped swinging it. Absolutely devastating (England in Napier, Aussie in Brisbane) when he has favourable conditions though.

I reckon Bond is equally susceptible to breaking down playing test match cricket as he is 4 day cricket for Canterbury, since he WILL play 4 day cricket if not in the test side, why not play him? He makes a mediocre attack without him look like a pretty decent attack with him.
Maybe I was thinking of his later spells regarding his speed. I will watch him when he next plays to see if you are right about consistent swing being the answer to his effectiveness.

Good points on Bond.

Tim McIntosh and Daniel Flynn's scores from Sydney grade cricket:

McIntosh:
58, 13, 75

Flynn:
0, 26, 27 (though the two latter scores were the highest in his team's innings)

I think there's potential that one of these two (but not both) is dropped for the test series against Pakistan, so in some ways are head to head - McIntosh obviously winning. More likely neither will be dropped, but there is a chance someone like Watling would catch the selectors' eyes. There is also a 3-day warmup match against Pakistan that both will apparently play in.

woah in terms of prep both teams are as bad as each other. past odi series between these side a pakistani pace guy has destroyed as, i remember akhar got 6-16 sami 5-10 its why im glad asif isn't allowed into dubai though his odi record isn't all that. for nz they key is 2 shut down the pakistani players who can score quickly, if they have the likes of yousuf and s malik batting the middle overs they will be okay, its the likes of afridi, akmal, razzaqs cameos that can really kill them because besides bond vettori and mills the rest of them are hit me bowlers unless there's pressure at the other end. be interesting to see how oram and mccullum perform, hope bj watling gets a chance and takes it and tim southee doesn't get another ton against his name, poor kid he's still only young and playing against the big boyz.

Fair point. Theoretically Styris and Oram would share 10. Had been toying with the idea of including Nath McCullum somewhere, but couldn't really find a way.
Quite like the look of your side, though. :)

Nathan McCullum would come in for Butler if either Butler was bowling crap, or the pitch was a dust bowl.
