*Official* Australia in India - ODIs

The Indians were undone by some mismanagement, or as some say, lack of common sense. The fielding looked bad because it was mismanaged- for instance, the gaps were wide and at places where you need the best fielders, you had the worst. We also saw a whole lot of undermanned places, where at catching positions, there was just one fielder- such as Tendulkar at slip or Gambhir at thirdman. Most successful fielding sides have fielders in packs at certain areas, where the batsman is either strong (cutting off runs) or struggling (catching), but there was enough space for taking singles as well as hitting boundaries.

Likewise, the Indian top seven applied little pressure on the Aussie fielding. We saw the tailenders go berserk and try to hit the big ones and pinch a few, and that unsettled the bowlers and fielders greatly. That could have been done by the top six- test their agility, throwing arms and speed. That would have got the Indians a lot more runs, but the Indians were just feeding the fielders all the time, or playing defensive strokes.

Two bowlers scoring runs is good news. That should now be a pointer for selection in ODIs, alongside basic fielding. This is where the Pathans and Chawla should be in line for a comeback, on the back of a good Ranji season. It's a pity Kumar and Harbhajan went for too many, but they did what they could to win the match back for them.

Even their bowling could have been managed better- set attacking fields for Harbhajan, bowl him at the final overs, bowl Praveen through the middle-overs and finish ten at one go. Mishra is also a good batsman lower down and being a superior bowler, could make his place in the team ahead of Jadeja. Ishant, though, is a conundrum. He's a good new-ball bowler, and he's slowly recovering his pace, but he's got no power with an old ball.

We wouldn't want too big a change in the XI- Ishant stays, while Mishra may come ahead of Jadeja and the mandatory Yuvraj in for Kohli. The option of Yuvraj and Sehwag bowling should go out of the window, as they need runs from both- Sehwag was out cheaply, while Yuvraj is recovering- and both need to be back on track. On flat pitches, they need to score big. And quick.

Jadeja has not shown he can bat, at international level, yet. He scored 60* in a dead situation against Sri Lanka and then has 0, 7 and 5 other than that.
List A, he averages 40 with a S/R of 90. Too early to write his few international performances. He has to get more chances.

Initially, I must note that I massively disagree with merely removing five wicket hauls - if for no other reason than to make statistics look worse. I feel it is needless and comes without good reason. Merely removing Sri Lanka from procedings does not make too much sense to me, unless there is a rational reason why he only performs against them.

I am leaning towards Mishra and Ojha being better options for India. However, I do feel we must be less hasty when looking to drop our premier ODI spinner for two newcomers. Moreover, the effect of Harbhajan's batting cannot be underestimated. Although he may not score the big scores, he often chips in with a quick 20, 30 or 40 and this can be invaluable down the order, especially when chasing a target, as today and especially when you have a joke of a batsman in at seven (bit harsh, but I'm not happy with how he batted), as today.
I wouldn't drop Harbhajan too right now but I would play Mishra in tandem with him to see how the two perform. Then, if Harbhajan keeps performing poorly, I would drop him.

Jadeja can bowl and can bat too. Perfect for this team till Yousuf Pathan learns to bowl. There is no other option we have really.
So can Mishra and Harbhajan, as also Praveen, and Chawla, and by a longshot, Zaheer. A group of them can be more effective than Jadeja on his own. He's neither a Shane Watson nor a Mitchell Johsnon, right now, and just an inferior replacement for Yusuf Pathan.

Jadeja can bowl and weak in the bowling department, particularly the 5th bowler's slot. Who could replace Jadeja as the 5th bowler? I don't see any one. Pathan right now is bowling poorly despite his batting

You'll Never Walk Alone
Tamil Nadu has played two T20s in the state T20. The rest of their games have been rained off. He took 3/31 against Goa and 1/21 against Kerala - both of 4 overs. The Ranji Trophy (4 day state competition) starts in a couple weeks and I'm sure he'll do his fair share of bowling there.

I assume you know about his stress fractures and so on, or else I'll elaborate.
Thanks. :) Indeed I do, followed his comeback well until this point. He seems to have fixed his action up nicely, the pace will come with more match time.

Pathan was never given a try. In 30 matches, he's only got 20 innings and three overs each. On the other hand, both Harbhajan and Ojha have bowled their full quota and have been largely unimpressive. Jadeja has been worse- he's got a century average in four matches. We saw how the Aussies built a partnership while facing him, by milking singles. Can he be bowled with two slips, a gully and bat-pad? Doesn't look like it. His lack of striking power is obvious- not one to turn up the scoring rate. Right now, Pathan is bowling well for Baroda in the SMA Trophy, and is the leading bowler for his team. He can return on the back of a good performance in SMA/Ranji.

In ODIs, Pathan averages 37 with the ball. In LIST A, he averages 40 with the ball. He is a great finisher and a hitter but needs to improve his bowling to get back into the team or we need to find other options for we are struggling right now for a 5th bowling option. Jadeja seems the best option to me and to the selectors as well as things stand.

4 performances of economy rate of above 7 in 27-28 matches. That's not bad at all. Generally very good as I said.
Four terrible performances in twenty-eight is a record is one terrible performance per seven ODIs, which is not a fantastic rate - but I guess he's clear for the series:dry:. Tbh though, the figures do not always show when he has been poor (poor reasoning, but allow me to elaborate). For example, this year, he has 12 wickets at 36.00 with an economy of 5.17. It would seem that either a Praveen Kumar with excellent control of swing, shows up or one who does not move the ball and whose accuracy ranges from good to poor depending on the day. The latter has been showing up far too much recently - I do hope he rediscovers some form, as he is our most talented ODI bowler, imo.

He has 3 OD fifties, far too early to make a judgement either way for ODI cricket.

He has been crap with his speed. I wouldn't consider him for international selection as things stand.
Not for ODIs, but as a reserve seamer for Tests, I'd definitely consider him considering his performance last season. For someone willing to bowl long spells, with a good deal of variation who has shown himself to succeed on flat pitches, I do not think that the fact that he is bowling 120-130kph matters massively.

Agreed.

I do not think that we have the resources to play a single fifth bowler, but that a combination of our number seven, Sehwag and Yuvraj can do the job.

I hope so. Must be noted though, that he was never the quickest of bowlers.

He just had one of the biggest matches of his life. Less than a day ago. Obvously didn't want to risk an injury, game one of seven, when it looked won by a long shot.
Understand where Ponting would be coming from... but to be fair though, Lee is probably the fittest int'l cricketer around (along with Ntini), and we're talking about a Twenty20 match here.

I understand it would have been mentally tiring, but come on.

Anyway, the minute India looked like they were even 10% of a chance of winning, Lee should have come on. Sure, when Jadeja was out LBW, fair enough. But once the Bhajji/Praveen partnership got to 40-50, Lee should have come on.

Perhaps they felt that the extra pace was a risk with deflections and the like, going for possible runs, it is not an unfeasible idea that it was a calculated risk not to bowl Lee.

In tests, speed does matter. I don't think Balaji is any where near contention for the test spot.

We have to play an all rounder in Jadeja IMO.

Nah because Siddle isn't exactly slow.

Lee's pace has hurt him often bowling at the death, but he still consistently does it in ODIs and T20s, both for Aust and NSW.

No way was it a tactical decision.

In ODIs, Pathan averages 37 with the ball because he's rarely got a chance to finish even seven overs. If he finished ten or at least seven regularly, the figures would be different. The List-A figures are a tad disappointing, but he's had an upswing lately, and has largely done well, bar one series or two. In the last ODI he played, he went for fewer runs than any bowler, bar Ishant. In FC cricket, he's a regular spinner and has repeatedly taken five wickets, including a ten in the same match where he scored a 150. These haven't been equalled by any batsman called on to bowl.

I'll again go back to your Pratosphere post on dropping Harbhajan. He's got a dreadful average this year, which would be worse without the five-wicket haul. Likewise, Ojha has looked largely unimpressive in ODIs. This is despite both being carried for long and given a very long run. Yet one's still tipped as the best ODI spinner and the other is largely, despite absence of batting, tipped as a hopeful for ODIs.

The current crop of bowlers isn't outstanding. There's nobody running riot like a Mendis or Mitch or even Saeed Ajmal. The option would be to pick as many bowlers who can score runs specially for ODIs- at least they'll recover some of what is lost.

I don't think it matters too much. I have seen Chaminda Vaas succeed at 115-125kph, I have seen Pollock succeed at 125kph. Heck, at the end of a long day, Zaheer Khan has been bowling sub-130kph and taking wickets with his swing. I think that a bowler can take Test wickets as long as he is above 120kph most of the time - especially when he can bowl long spells and moves the ball.

They have to play an all-rounder. Anybody. For an extended period of time. Treat him as an investment, not as India's Kallis or the next Kapil Dev.

Yes, Siddle is fast, but Siddle had to bowl. For me, it was Siddle to continue and then a question of Lee or Watson, to which Ponting sided with Watson. Of course, the speed alone idea is a simplification, but I feel that it is not unreasonable that Ponting thought that Watson would have been a better option.

@ Arjun - I don't think an all rounder is necessarily the answer. If Jadeja fails, we can bring back Rohit Sharma in place of Jadeja or Pathan if he improves his bowling because Pathan is as clean a striker of the ball as they come. Rohit Sharma is doing some bowling now and Yuvraj, Sehwag and Sharma can play the role of the 5th bowler. Sharma would also improve our batting immensely. It is an option we can think of in the long term but first Rohit Sharma has to string in consistent performances domestically and Jadeja has to fail. So there are a lot of ifs for that to happen.

Is Balaji special like Zaheer or Pollock to do it though? I don't think so.
