So who will be our next number 3? We seem to have sorted out our lower order problem only to create a new one.

We could keep Martin Guptill there for awhile, though I'm not really in favour of him playing at three. I wouldn't mind seeing Watling, Broom or even Flynn being given a run there tbh.

Would guess something like this when everyone is fit:

Ryder
Guptill
Taylor
Styris
Elliott
Vettori
B McCullum
Franklin
Mills
Bond
Tuffey

I've gone right off playing Taylor at three, especially after seeing him play in the Champions League.

Agree with you there, would rather see him at 5 myself.

Couldn't we turn Elliott into our number 3?
Perhaps. But how would Elliott's innings go? He usually get's going by scoring 15-20 of 25-30 odd balls, coming in early will make scoring singles a little more difficult.

I'd like to see:

Ryder
Guptill
Broom/Flynn
Elliott
Taylor
Vettori
Oram
McCullum

Elliott as our number 3 could be worth a try.
Styris/Taylor @ 4/5 depending on match situation. Taylor at 4 though for the most part.
Vettori 6
McCullum 7

Elliott should stay where he is.

I vote we bring in an actual top order batsman for the position, like Taylor, Guptill, Watling, How,Fulton, Flynn, Todd or whoever.

I'd keep Guptill at three and open with Watling myself. Or we could have How at three and Guptill open.

Styris at 3 IMO. He has an awesome Test record at 3 IIRC; not sure about his ODI record there but he did well at 4.. I think he'd be fine there.

Have to say I never realized we had so many Kiwis on the forums.
Its more the fact we never shut up because even if our eleven is pretty much nailed down, someone still finds an issue somewhere. :p

In this case some of our better batsmen are injured, so we're in talking overdrive.

Shahid Afridi
Umar Gul
Mohd. Aamir
Saeed Ajmal
Mohd. Asif

Presuming YK retains captaincy of course. This is my preferred order tbh. I think this is a great opportunity to try UA out at three and give him a chance to really show what he's worth. I also think going in without Asif against the Kiwis would be a mistake. I would prefer to try someone else in the middle order as well instead of YK, but I can't see that happening in the current climate. Gul could be replaced with Naved if Asif/Aamir open the bowling though here I'd prefer Talha to be given another chance.
Good team. Asif and Aamir will make a formidable pairing and Umar Gul can do a good job if used mostly at the death. Ajmal and Afridi are a strong partnership in the middle overs too. I do feel that Rana Naved is 'past it' though, his slower balls may be able to pick up wickets but I don't think that he has the pace that he once had to generate enough wickets to justify his often expensive spells.

I do not think Talha is ready for another chance, despite obvious potential and news from cricinfo that he is working hard on his run up, I don't think that his domestic performances justify ODI selection. He only has 35 OD wickets at 33.88 with an economy of 5.94, which is quite poor. He may have performed well for the A team in Sri Lanka, but I do not think that it is enough to defend his selection, considering form previous to that.

Can imagine McCullum's ego taking that pretty hard, as he doesn't like to be seen to take a step back. Could be a good move - I guess we'll wait and see. Personally was more in favour of pushing Ryder down the order instead.

The other interesting thing from that article was this:
Vettori said New Zealand would wait on Ryder's availability for home Test series against Pakistan that follows the ODIs to fill the gap left by Jacob Oram, who announced his decision to retire from the five-day format. "If he's [Ryder] fit, then he can play that extra bowler role, with back-up perhaps from someone like Grant Elliott."
From that I gather that Elliott is likely to be preferred to Franklin for that number 6 & 5th/6th bowler spot in tests. Interesting. Though I guess both may play against Pakistan if Ryder still injured.

Unless Franklin is going to bowl atleast 130K and look like taking a wicket he shouldn't be in the test team imo. As for Ryder playing as the 5th bowler, best thing for the team balance I reckon, it just allows us to bat really deep.
