Another solid attacking display, albeit against a totally inferior team. Defence remains a worry though.

Looks like this season Liverpool aren't going to fluke a number of victories against the top sides. Will be lucky to scrape a CL position.

Well, Liverpool were well and truly schooled today. Chelsea were extremely impressive I thought. Defended excellently and really didn't allow Liverpool any chances, particularly in the second half. Really shows up why Liverpool will not win the league this season, Chelsea lightyears ahead. Drogba, much as I dislike him had a great game today, did really well to set up both of the goals and worked really hard throughout. Ashley Cole was also excellent, really gave Glen Johnson a lesson in what it takes to be an international fullback, absolutely different class.

Might well be the best player in the whole division, he is really is a fantastic player, no matter what people think about him.

Yeah, Liverpool just could not deal with him, particularly on the second goal, he just totally out-muscled their defence and left them with no chance. So hard to defend against a player like that. Wish he would cut out the way he throws himself on the floor though, doesn't really sit well to see a player that is so physically powerful just crumple under a light challenge.

Bent's a properly good player, but I wouldn't say he's a target man. He plays off Kenwyne Jones (also an excellent player).
Not saying he is a target man, but he can play that role - especially with Heskey not getting much game time for Villa. Its back to back games vs United againts an international quality defense he has looked good, he should be in the squad as the back-up target man option behind Heskey instead of C Cole or Crouch.

Indeed. More reason why Capello should drop Johnson before the WC, dont see how he can improve his defensive between now & then.

None of those make great target men tbh, if Heskey is injured or unavailable then England ought to abandon that strategy and change tactics completely. It's completely counter productive to try and make a target man out of a player who has made his name as someone who plays off a target man.

He may have played of Jones yesterday, but for Spurs last season he was playing as the target man especially while Keane was at Liverpool.

Yeah, and look how badly he did compared to all the other periods throughout his career. Though his scoring record actually was not awful, his performances were more than a shade worse than before he started in that role. This is my overall point really, there is no point shunting someone into the role of target man if they can only do a mediocre job, I mean, Scott Carson might be a mediocre full back, but nobody would ever seriously consider putting him in that role if one of the first teamers got injured, the problem would be worked around, as it should be here.

Agree with this. Crouch just isn't a target ma and Cole i don't think is good enough, what we saw last season was high form rather than an improvement in quality.

There's noone else really worth considering in the target man role, so bring on Crouch/Bent as a completely different option altogether.
