Usually because either

A) pacy enough to half a half decent crack at a winger
B) tackle better than you cross
C) too short to be a centre back

When I've played outfield I'm either a winger or a full back, and early on when both sets of players are fresh i'd rather a winger stood back from me and crossed early than ran at me, because a fresh legged guy running can make you commit and stick you on your arse, whereas the winger who stands back and crosses can be distracted by you closing down, may be made to mi**** it, or charged down.

When the legs are going later on and cant charge down the ball, that guy who can place it on from the flank can rip a hole between you and the centre back and place it nicely for an alert striker
I believe you meant "mis-hit" :p

It's all well and good, but the full backs who rise to the top tend to be the ones who are best at dealing with wingers who run at them. It's not necessarily the best or the most important skill, but it's the most eye-catching. When someone is at Beckham's level I don't think any amount of charging him down to put him off will stop a quality delivery getting into the box most of the time.

Personally, I'd prefer someone running at me early in the game rather than late in the game, but that's just me.

Norwood's on Fire
One of my best mates went from the 04-05 season through to last season and only missed the following games:

- Doncaster away, August 04 (his Dad's wedding)
- Peterborough away, FA Cup, November 04 (we went but got stuck behind a big smash on the motorway and never made it to the game)
- Chesterfield away, August 06 (he got ran over prior to the game and broke his leg)
- Leyton Orient home, September 06 (in hospital after that accident)

This season he's already skipped Carlisle, Wycombe & today away from home, said the only reason he went to Exeter is because it was a ground he'd never been to. And he's not the only one, it's happening left, right and centre. Millwall away is a game that the lads would have taken a minibus to normally, the apathy amongst the fans is staggering. I've never known anything like this. Sacking Ronnie Moore is the worst decision that has ever been made in football, whilst everyone else is shouting 'barnes Out' I will be shouting 'JOHNSON OUT', please GTFO out of my club, yes I appreciate you saving us but it doesn't excuse you ruining us you fat ****, **** off

BARNES OUT
It's awesome headers like that that make me miss Vedran all the more. The fact that the joke that is Micah Richards is playing his position makes it even worse.

Ronnie Moore's Rotherham 3-2 up at Crewe. I wish they hadn't appointed him as there is a vacancy he'd be well-suited to coming up on Monday morning.

And there's a red card for one of our defenders, oh, and a ****ing goal, great 8-)

You spineless shower of ****e

Currently watching Man Utd v Sunderland and the home side are losing. I'm a bit worried I might miss the injury time winner, I've got a date in 4 hours.

****in hell. Seriously lucky to get away from that one with a point.

Was impressed with Anderson again today once he came on. Much more dominant than Scholes, so much more of a presence. Just don't ****ing shoot.

If Capello really is looking to try another "traget man" option Bent should play ahead of C Cole. Bent has really been in superb form since the back end of last season for Spurs, now he is carrying it on.

Bent's a properly good player, but I wouldn't say he's a target man. He plays off Kenwyne Jones (also an excellent player).

Thought that Bent would do well (glad he has, he in my fantasy side) he does not always look fantastic but he is always get goals, even during his tough time at Spurs his scoring record was far from bad. Sunderland the perfect club for him, guaranteed a start every week.

Steve Bruce has also become an excellent manager, has done it in a rather unspectacular manner but he is now amoungst the best English managers.
