Raif from Australia is perplexed: "I'm not sure I understand the Denly selection, it appears to me that Cook, as a test incumbent, must be the best opener in England as far as the selectors are concerned. So to not be in the ODI side, assumedly it has got to be because of his poor strike rate and lack of aggression at the top. Now despite that perhaps being a problem with the entire England batting order, what I don't understand is why has Cook been replaced by someone with an even lower one day strike rate? It just seems to me it's changing the problem not solving it."

The boy has a point here.....where is Cook?

Hmm, we're truly in deepest ****shire here, aren't we. The openers swinging the new ball round corners with M&M to come when the ball's older. Worth putting money on England failing to reach 3 figures imo.

Well Cook has been in good OD form the last few weeks, but his ODI record for England is pretty indifferent - no I think Denly was worth a look. No team plays the same XI in Tests and ODIs anyway, least of all Australia.

Maybe not right now, but their WC winning sides have been massively dominated by test players. Which I think has been true for every good oneday side.

It's been true for pretty much every one-day side. Not many countries have ever fully experimented with a team of one-day specialists.

There's a cause-effect debate to be had there too. Australia's WC winning side were good because they were excellent ODI cricketers, not because they were also good at tests.

He made 8 in the current game
Playing there for Essex, btw.

It's not an easy call - as has been said, his odi record is moderate, but I don't know how long a run he was given. And his oneday form has picked up for Essex this year.

The ball still seems to be moving miles. Did England completely waste their position, or has it got even livelier in the late afternoon/early evening?

Joe just looks ugly when he is playing ....i remember watching cook he has a decent style....i would have voted for a test opener for England they need to consolidate in the early overs and need someone to stay at the wicket.....

Effects of the early evening dew, perhaps. Not that it had anything to do with that wicket.

Moved miles for England too, don't think it's changed. If anything Kula and Mathews appear to be moving the ball more because they're a touch slower than Onions and Jimmeh.

Kula is tailor-made to torture Colly outside off.
