At the time it was scored, it comdemmed United. By the end of 90 minutes, it became irrelevant.

Therefore it still mattered.

It was as good as irrelevant even at the time it went in though, given it happened about five minutes from (what would have been) the end of the match, and the results in the other matches were already as good as decided. Relevant only as much as a consolation goal with five minutes to go in a 4-1 defeat is relevant to the outcome of the match.

Re: Bellamy's first, should have been closed down by O'Shea really. Cracking strike though when he created the space.

Haha, Studs Up is quality. My personal fav is:

Mainly because it's so very true.
Heh, the thought of Ade having a butler and calling him Mr Bigglesworth cracks me up every time.

Mr.Bigglesworth. Heh.

Also:

In 48 games when United were ahead at Old Trafford, the average amount of stoppage time was 191.35 seconds. In 12 matches when United were drawing or losing there was an average of 257.17sec.

Although I lold at Hughes' face after the game they do take the piss sometimes at Old Trafford.

Probably a large part of that is because when we're 3 or 4 goals up the ref doesn't see any need to drag the game out.

Actually I don't think a minute extra is that bad on reflection. Considering any away team who visits Arsenal and looks like getting a win or draw ends up trying to waste time at every opportunity possible I'm sure it's exactly the same at Old Trafford. Heh, Bigglesworth.

Yeah exactly - he even acknowledges, albeit very briefly, that the numbers are similar at Emirates/Anfield/Stamford Bridge but then magically disregards that inconvenient little fact so he can keep going at United. But then it is Daniel Taylor.

There shouldn't ever be a "need" to drag a game out.

I get what you're saying, but perhaps not the perfect choice of words ;)

Surely this whole issue could be avoided if football adpoted rugby's practice of the clock being stopped when the ball is out of play for any significant period and the time remaining being shown to the crowd and tv audience?

Would do away with time-wasting substitutions at a stroke too.

WHat counts as 'any reasonable time' though? Ball is usually only in play about an hour IIRC

Completely agree - is there a particular reason that football's powers-that-be don't consider it workable? Would make so much sense IMO.
