Well lets look at who get the nod ahead of him.
Samaraweera - got shot and then scored a shed load of runs. Should definitely be there.
Strauss - won the Ashes so is worthy of getting ahead of him
Johnson - hmm... pretty debatable but when he was hot he was on fire
Gambhir - also has scored a shed load but probably could be swapped for AB
Emerging player should be Ryder in all fairness. Bloke averages 50ish in Test cricket.
Surprised Hughes didn't get a mention ahead of the likes of Onions or the been emerging for a while Aussie bowlers.
Samaraweera: Getting shot does not and should not get you performance awards.......so considering the time frame picked for awards he averages 82.07 in his 8 tests against Pakistan, Bangladesh, New Zealand.
Strauss: Winning the Ashes does not make him the best Test Player of the year. I hope you realize how close the Ashes was....and Freddie won the Ashes for England...as far as i am concerned...
Again in the criteria selected Strauss averages 60.13 against Australia, India and West Indies (which is pretty decent but lets see where he stands).
Ghambir: If anything Gambhir has performed above par.....averaging 84.60 against the likes of Aussies, English and Kiwis......
I am surprised to find out that after all, ICC is not a load of crape when picking players for the awards......AB scored heavily against the Australians with an average of 75......but the problem is, in the selected criteria, he played 6 tests against Australia out of his 8 total, and 2 others against Bangladesh in which he averages only 1.50 .....which essentially brought down his over all average to 60.30 ........way below Gambhir's ........
Looking at the averages, and against what oppositions they were scored.....Ladies and Gents, my pick for the Test Player of the year is Gambhir........scored heavily against 2 top Test sides....and one decent side......the only other candidate is Samaraveera who is slightly below in average then Gambhir but most of all his only decent opposition has been Pakistan (considering that Pak bowling attack is better then NZ's or Bangladesh's).
To me it will be unfair to rate anyone else other then Gambhir to be the Test player of the year.....
