I wonder about Australia's plans. In test matches it's hard because he's become excellent at leaving the ball- you really need someone who can get the ball to straighten from around the wicket. In ODIs you can just float it out there full and wide and let him get himself out. The number of balls he's had on his pads is shocking.

People have been saying this for ages. Whenever it looks like he's finally going to be dropped, though, a Test series rolls around and he plays a few quick-fire innings that make people think he deserves another go in the colours.

The real insanity of it all is the fact that they have a 23 year old wicket keeper who opens the batting in one day domestic cricket, takes advantage of the PowerPlays and hits over the top. His stats for the this season? Over 650 runs @ 56 with a strike rate of 112.

Not just Hilf. Those things just don't swing these days. Picking any swing bowler in one-day cricket is a bit of a waste of time.

The talk back when Hilf came into the ODI side earlier this year was that he was very good at the death. Anything to that?

It's not unheard of, but it's very rare to see a white ball swing these days. Which is exactly why lbws like Shah just got shouldn't really be given. Good appeal from the Aussies. Really bought that wicket.

Nah not really IMO; got some reverse swing against NSW in one game, but got most of his wickets with slower ball variations IIRC. Doesn't even regularly open the bowling.

It's such a damning indictment of the format that James Hopes's bowling is so useful. What's the point of the guy? He just bowls 80mph on a length. In test matches he'd get milked, in T20s he'd get smashed. Only in an ODI could such a dour, dour bowler be such an asset.

The Ump has done us a favour as he most likely would have run Strauss out by now if he was still out there.
