I'd compare it to the place held in Britain by the Advertising Standards Authority. They have no legal powers, so if they tell you to cut an advertisement you can just refuse. But no one ever does.
That's a good point, however, the punishment in this instance is a great deal more severe, insofar that it completely and fundamentally undermines the commercial purpose of Chelsea FC as a commercial enterprise. I remember the FA suggested that after the tapping up saga with Ashley Cole they would block him from joining Chelsea, but surprise surprise, after realising this was impossible, the idea was panned.

Although I doubt there is any pro football club who hasn't tapped a player up (let alone a big European club) I have little sympathy for Chelsea copping the ban. The manner they have arrogantly tapped players and staff up and payed clubs off(Arnesen, ****ley and Mikel) particularly grated. Not an ounce of sympathy from me. Suck it up ****os.

However if the authorities were truly serious about cleaning this **** up then they should've started with Madrid and Barcelona who are the absolute pits in the disrespect they show other clubs.

Given that Barcelona buy kids from South America and effectively make them Spanish because they've been there so long, far worse than tapping up and paying off clubs for mine.

Lucas Neil going to Atletico Madrid according to FSN here. Itstl. Playing for a Champions League club would be awesome for him and the Roos.

To be honest Arsenal have done a lot of similar things, just that the players haven't always been as young. I mean, Almunia is eligible for England, Toure would have been by now if he hadn't played for the Ivory Coast, Fabregas is another one, Bendtner would also be in the near future.

GIMH: I know we dive, but so do your lot, so do players in the Championship. What I don't know is what you can do in cases such as Eduardo's and Rooney's and many others. It should only be if it's 100% a dive with no debate or "arguable" nature to it then the player should be punished. ie, when there's no goalkeeper flopping in front of them and they aren't at full speed and they really never did get touched at all etc etc.
Our boys don't have the ball long enoguh to dive these days :(

Changing the subject a bit the Finland-England quarter-final in the Women's-euro was fairly thrilling stuff, if not high quality. Well done England:)

Least the club that has trained Mikel for instance got some money for losing him
Er...no. Chelsea parked Mikel in Norway aged 18 because they couldn't get a work permit for him. His clubs in Africa got nowt, the Norwegian club got £5 million...

You forgot paying medical expenses and treating hormone deficiencies which their Argentine clubs could not provide...

And last time I checked, Messi plays for Argentina. Barcelona wouldn't want him playing for Spain. Any examples of Spanish clubs buying South American kids and turning them into Spaniards? Senna become Spanish through residency as an adult...

Some irony considering Arsenal effectively tapped up Cesc. Same with Pique and Man U. Both players couldn't have contracts, were willing to wait until their eighteenth birthday but were offered riches to move.

Barcelona produce a plethora of players who come from Catalonia i.e. their area. Shouldn't be condemned for producing indigenous players.

Least the club that has trained Mikel for instance got some money for losing him, whereas you can't pay a transfer fee for kids under a certain age as i understand the rules.
As I understand it, they scout promising players at a young age, give them a contract that brings about a quality of life they could only dream of in their native countries, and with the club's training methods they often mature into world-class players. The clubs in Argentina are compensated and everyone's happy. Even if you feel the level of compensation isn't enough, the whole business isn't exactly a horredous evil.

Don't people slag off Angelina Jolie/Madonna for doing pretty much the same thing?

Kind of, but not really, you are able to purchase player's at anytime you like, they just won't be eligible until after the transfer window comes into effect. Though you could argue this is the same as what is happening to Chelsea now, the way it has been worded by UEFA is that Chelsea have actually been banned from signing new players full stop, which is dodgy to say the least.
Far as i'm aware the wording is Chelsea cant register new players for 2 transfer windows, in theory they can sign a contract with them, just not eligible to play for Chelsea untill 2011

As did the club who were bribed not to report Chelsea for tapping up

Nah, Chelsea didnt come along untill after he was in Norway, after we'd tapped him up, sorry, agreed a deal with him. Hence the nice £10m they gave us as compensation. Thats as far as i understand it

I would imagine that must be the case, it's probably the only way they can attempt to impose the ruling without blatantly breaking the law. Even so, I would still suggest it's legality is dubious at best, as although it's not restricting trade per se, that is effectively what it is doing.

According to the beeb some Swiss club got the same punishment imposed on them and appealed it, The CAS froze the sanction until the appeal was held, no decision made yet.

This is the official version that both clubs agree to. However, it is fairly clear that someone paid Lyn for "storing" Mikel and a couple other Nigerian players (otherwise they wouldn't have ended there but have gone through Belgium like every other football-launderer does), and Norwegian journalists who have written rather excessively about the case claim to have evidence that Chelsea was paying the Nigerians during their stay in Norway.
