Not current policy and hasn't been for years. The likes of India routinely cap any seamer with form or promise in one of the many ODI's they play throughout the year and Australia usually chuck a Hail Mary bowler in during their summer (Dorey, Lewis, Harwood, Laughlin et cetera) but South Africa like to keep to the tried and tested.

The only see if the **** sticks type of bowlers they have tried recently are Louw and Kleinveldt but even their selections were regarded as footnotes to the future. Selectors did think Kleinveldt could offer the side something not just against Kenya and Bangladesh but against the likes of Australia and Louw was picked because he was apparently the best death bowler going and South Africa needed one.

Pretty difficult to get into the South African fold as players are not dumped on a regularly basis. Downfalls usually take years, not months and definitely not games. Pollock's demise was slow, Ntini's looks like it will be even slower.

And it was Mike Procter, a new selector who pushed the panic button after South Africa lost the test series to Australia at Durban and demanded new blood. Graeme Smith and Mickey Arthur were content with what they already had.

Up to retirement I reckon. He isn't showing signs of aging except maybe for his weight problem (which he is working on).

Well see i guess. Cause surely at lets say age 38, his bowling would have lost some penetration.

Think he and Bouch will bow out after the 2011 World Cup. Both players have said they achieved all they can in test cricket and the only thing left for them is ICC success.

Contrary to what many people say, also think Kallis enjoys bowling . He is 33 and could have given it up years ago but he still seems genuinely 'excited' when he takes wicket and it does take a lot of pressure of his batting, as he feels he has already contributed when he bowls well.

The way it should be IMO. Selectors are way too reactionary on the whole and members of the public tend to be even moreso.

The only problem with that is it can create an environment where players feel they are untouchable. One of the biggest criticism of the South African team is that they are too relaxed at times, regard selection as a given and there is an unhealthy clique which was fostered by allowing sameness to continue.

Guys like Loots Bosman, Garnett Kruger and Gulam Bodi have been critical, stating that they were not warmly welcomed as they were replacing cricketers from the 'clique'.

You only have to see when South African players are dropped, the **** storm which that creates even when the decisions are correct. An example would be Jacques Kallis not being selected for the 2007 20/20 WC. A logical decision based on the fact that Kallis wasn't experienced in the format and didn't then have a specific but that episode nearly led to Kallis retiring from international cricket.

Another young U19 keeper to look out for is Mangaliso Mosehle. Unlike Barnes, Mangaliso Mosehle is a very dangerous batsman (opened for RSA U19's, current Lions opener, Andrea Agathagelou was his partner...) and Jennings has said that Mosehle will go on to play for the Proteas. Think he has a rookie contract with the Titans, so it will be interesting how he develops as they already have a fine wicket-keeper in the form of Heino Kuhn. Game was today (forgot there was a bank holiday, keep thinking it is a Wednesday...) and it was against a Jacques Kallis XI as the Lions were playing the Dolphins and not everyone was available (9 contracted Lions players featured).

Captain Botha's men won the game comfortably by four wickets with three overs to spare. Mark Boucher impressed with the bat, scoring 96 off 91 balls whilst JP also chipped in with a half century. As for the opposition, Virus impressed with a 53, de Wet according to SuperSport was lively whereas diminutive RSA U19 cricketer, Temba Bavuma impressed Proteas coach, Mickey Arthur.

Apparently very slow and low. Taking pace off the ball was the key. Kallis just bowled cutters whilst the spinners proved their worth.

Interesting that Lonwabo Tsotsobe didn't feature in both games. South Africa should really have arranged some ODI games with Zimbabwe and a fellow Champions Trophy side (Pakistan). As he and few of the other guys need a real workout. Been a relatively long break and Steyn is the type of bowler who gets better, the more he bowls.

Sri Lanka, India, New Zealand, Australia and England will all be coming into the tournament on the back of ODI cricket.

Coach, Mickey Arthur and the players rejected any competitive cricket in the month of August. Zimbabwe was going to host them and India.

Saw your reply about the step up from ODI and FC to test cricket TT boy. You're dead right and if it was up to me personally I would want Parnell to get stronger and play a season or 2 in domestic 4-day cricket before test call-up. Hence Morne and McLaren must fight over the number 8 spot.

Proteas looking decent in warm-up games. I'm a big fan of Amla but Gibbs is a match winner for us and if he has the right mind set (which he has at the minute) he has to play ahead of Amla.

I'm not happy woth the Peterson and Ntini selections for champs trophy. heres no doubt Langeveldt will come in for Ntini when fit.

I still believe players like Elgar and Vandiar must jump Peterson for WC selection especially with being able to bowl very decent spin and be top batsmen.

Then there is also Morne and McLaren who are out the 15-man squad.

Its good to see the depth.

Eagles have announced squad for champs league.

The Diamond Eagles confirmed their team that will compete in the Airtel Champions League in India. The coach Sarel Cilliers surprisingly decided to name only one acknowledge spin bowler in his squad, Thandi Tshabalala. Tshabalala is one of the best bowlers in the short history of domestic Twenty/20-cricket in South Africa. Dean Elgar can also be used as a slow bowler in India.

Cilliers also included seamer CJ de Villiers. The seamer will start bowling in the nets again on 14 September after suffering a injury. Charl Pietersen and Con de Lange is on standby if De Villiers won't be ready to make the trip to India.

Warmup game: Free State vs Griquas

Griqualand West declared their first innings on 431/6 after facing 82,5 overs on the first day of their three day trial match against Free State at the cricket field of the Central University of Tecnology in Bloemfontein. Free State won the toss and elected to send Griquas in to bat. Three batsmen of Griquas Alan Kruger (140, 149b), Wendell Bossenger (110,138b) and Reeza Hendricks (100, 121b) weighed in with centuries on a flat track.

Hendricks shared a 133 run opening partnership with youngster Gihan Cloete over the first wicket. Cloete scoring 24 runs from 81 balls before spinner Thandi Tshabalala rearranged his stumps. Hendricks struck 17 fours and a six in his innings before he was caught by Con de Lange off the bowling of Dillon du Preez. Kruger also struck 17 fours and hitting six sixes in his innings. Bossenger was caught by Ryan Bailey off his own bowling.

Obus Pienaar (2/53) and Tshabalala (2/78) was the home team's best bowlers. The Free State will continue their first innings today at 48/0 with Dean Elgar (35*) and Divan Wyk (13*) in the middle.
