But i'll play along with you for a second. Please explain to me how it makes the BCs have a better balance with McGlashan keeping. Are you trying to tell me that the BCs look a better team with McGlashan and his CAREER 3.83 batting average whereas they could have a Styris or another batsman in there making the team looking better?

Its all about balance and McGlashan has proved Jack at this level to date. We look weak at this point once we get 4 down. Broom - McGlashan - Butler - Vettori (not a great T20 batsman) thats very green

It makes no sense to me and smacks of B Mac picking and choosing what he wants and not whats best for the team

Have you seen what Sangakkara has done with the bat since giving up the gloves to Jayawardene? Mccullum is far too important a batsman in our team to let the keeping get in the way of his batting. He's the best T20 batsman in NZ, probably a one of the top 3 in the world when in form as well.
I just feel this is the best way to go and the management also feels the same I guess.

And please don't call me an idiot ok?

All very valid points but mccullum at his best is better than any of the batsmen u mentioned. if mccullum feels keeping is a burden there is no other option other than getting a new keeper in there because we need him in the team. we know he's trying his best out there but sometimes u need a change to re-energize urself. Also, McGlashan is a bloody good player and gives it his 100% every game.

Whilst all sport is about trying your best what is more important in Professional sport is performing. So for me, that does not come into it for McGlashan.

Again my opinion is that with McCullum keeping you are improving both your keeper and your batting while losing a little in the field. Which i can live with and want

I agree with Half-pastyellow his ODI 50 that he scored was awesome. He has an excellent List A batting record good enough to be picked for the blackcaps as their number 6 batsman ahead of broom if you ask my opinion.

These numbers are the reason they are persisting with him if he can be successful in List A cricket and an ODI then it must be a matter of bad luck that he hasn't come good in his 20/20 international career. To your point he has had 6 innings and has only a 3.83 avg to show for it - but I say give him a few more tries before you peg him as a 50 over specialist instead. But eventually if he keeps up the 3.83 record then they will have to pull the plug on him.

I gave you legitimate arguments as to why i think we dont have our best side out on the field at present and all you can give me, whilst very valid, is copying a previous post about a small sample size of 6 innings plus a rubbish comment at the end.

You are preaching to the converted with most of us. Havn't seen too many people supporting the selection of Hopkins.

I've been thinking about it & I honestly don't mind McCullum not keeping in the T20's. I actually reckon he adds more value in the field than with the gloves in terms of being able to save runs & create wickets through catches & run-outs.

He's actually a pretty amazing mover in the outfield, I remember a couple of his fielding performances in the '09 IPL tournament being as good as I've ever seen as far as all-round fielding displays go.

Add to that, McGlashan's not the worst by any stretch as an option coming in at no.8 or 9 as he can be reasonably innovative with the bat.

That said, would still like to see McCullum sticking with the gloves in ODI's & Tests at this stage.

Anyone else have similar views on his value in the outfield in T20s?

I've run through McCullum's stats, and found some interesting results. In ODI's, when he's captain, his ODI average is over 71, as against 27 when he's not captain. As for his wicketkeeping, in ODIs, he has an average over 35 when he's fielding, but it drops to 27 when he's behind the stumps. It's visible even in T20Is- his average as a 'keeper is 23, while it goes up to 34 when he's fielding. His average as captain drops under 20 in T20Is. That's a lot like Sangakkara, who is regarded as one of the best wicketkeeping all-rounders of today, but his batting average shoots up significantly when he's in the outfield. Alternatively, if they wish to risk having McCullum doing an all-round role, they have to pick a better batsman than him for the top six.

So what does that imply? McCullum is one of their better batsmen, but his batting may be affected a little by wicketkeeping duty. If the specialist wicketkeeper has an average under four, you can bat him under the likes of Oram, Vettori, Mills and Bond. If batting is a problem, give it time to get better, or else, look for a better option (especially glovework) as a specialist wicketkeeper.
