*Official* English Football Season 2009-2010

I think you've missed "or attempting to trip" out of there.

The attempting clause thus means that there doesn't have to be contact for something to be a foul...

EDIT: you mentioned it in a later post. For me that is why the penalty on Tuesday could quite legitimately be given - Boruc may have withdrawn from making contact, but he did slide out with some intent IMO.
DWTA, no-one intends to trip a striker up in the penalty area unless they are deliberately trying to lose.

Rooney was always going to be brought down with the momentum he was going with, i dont think he could have avoided Almunia TBF..
Reckon the debate would be non existant if the contact was with Rooneys ankle and not knee. Even sillier dive than Eduardo's in my eyes, because it was totally unneccessary in that he would've won a clean penalty a fraction of a second later

Lopez scores about a goal every other game and has a better goal per game ratio than Diego Milito (0.48 vs 0.42). Diego is 30 and Lopez 26 years old to boot.
Sigh. Stats man, you do know the Italian and Spanish leagues are far better than Portugal and France?

24 goals in Serie A season (what Diego Milito did last year) is the equivalent of 30+ in Portugal. The season where Kevin Phillips won European Golden Boot for Sunderland, he was outscored by Porto's Mario Jardel (by the tune of six goals), but his goals were deemed less 'important' as he played in a Mickey Mouse league.

Europe has three top domestic leagues, Milito has proven himself in two, Lopez hasn't.

But after landing Ukrainian centre-back Dmytro Chygrynskiy for £22million, Barca boss Pep Guardiola insisted his spending is over.

The ****? £22million is crazy crazy money for Chygrynski.

Petrov to Spurs for Bentley is a ****ing ******** idea and will seriously **** us. Spurs just lost their LM, so let's sell them one of serious quality for ****ing tuppence and take one of their biggest disruptive influences off their hands who's a complete ****head.

Yeah great business, Hughes.

Was about to post more or less the same thing in response, well said.

I know a guy who's son went to school with Bentley. If you believe young David, you've just signed the new Bergkamp (chav version obv)

Nico Kranjcar off to Spurs.

The only surprise about the move is that Nico isn't represented by Willy.

Spurs also looking to sign Citeh's Martin Petrov. Big fan of Martin, hasn't got the pace he once had but he still is a good winger. Shame Rovers haven't got a pot, be a fantastic signing and Petrov wouldn't even have to move home.
Should of asked for him in return for selling RSC to Citeh IMO.

Would be awesome if Harry could get Petrov!

Also lol at Mario Jardel getting a mention on here, such a hack in the A League.

Yeah, I do understand the difference, and I agree. But it's not that clear-cut. Lopez has a very good scoring record in the CL - the highest competition for clubs in the world, so you're not talking about a dodo. Last year's Italy was a disgrace although I agree with his performances in Spain before, I wouldn't consider Italy a top domestic league anymore. Still, as I said, Diego is 30 (will be 31 when WC is on) and has probably seen his best years (although in the slower Italy he may play for longer), Lopez is 26 and still yet to hit his peak. He's already got 6 goals for Lyon and in France they can't stop raving about him.

Maybe it's personal preference but I'd prefer a forward like Lopez than Milito. We'll see at the end of the season how they've done and whether they earn a call-up.

I wouldn't read too much into getting a hat-trick against Anderlecht in the second leg, I watched their first leg in the CL Qualifier against Lyon and quite frankly Lyon made Anderlecht look like a bunch of school boys at the Stade Gerland.

The strange case of Mario Jardel. That man has one of the craziest goalscoring records in history. He made his name with Porto, where he hit 130 goals in 125 games. Then he went to Galatasaray for $16m, where he scored "only" 22 in 24 games but fell out of favour somewhat. He defected to Sporting Lisbon after a year where he proceeded to score 53 in 49 games.

Sam Allardyce snapped him up for Bolton on a free transfer, but didn't play him because he couldn't get fit. He hasn't ever quite been the same since.

Jardel wasn't much of a footballer, but he's the best finisher I've ever seen. He just didn't miss. Ever.

That is why I never understood some of the critism levelled at Ruud van Nistelrooy when he was at MU. Most people could see he and Thierry Henry were different players (and Henry being a better player), and RVN's job was just to stick the ball in the net, and that is what he did. Sticking the ball is what wins you Premierships etc.

Wait until he gets Beckham-ed and takes a boot to the face from Fergie...

No way will he stay there for another 10 odd years.
Also on the site says that Pompey want Benjani and Tal Ben-Haim. Not sure if there is much thruth to it though.

The Italian league is a distance third when compared to Spain or England but it is still comfortably stronger than France and Portugal, and the way the European Golden Boot is decide still reflects that. Italy is a 2.0 league, Portugal 1.5.

And traditionally scoring goals in the Italian league has always been 'harder' than scoring in Spain and England where teams are traditionally more open. Sometimes you get the odd anomaly like the Roma side a few years back where Totti scored 26 league goals from midfield but shut-up-shop tactics still exist.

Also think both players goal scoring exploits (and form) this season will be irrelevant with Diego Maradona. Evident in how a fat Newcastle winger and apparently 34 year old, Juan Sebastian Veron are getting selected.

' Pompey manager Paul Hart is hoping to sign striker Benjani from Manchester City.

However, that deal could be scuppered by Sven-Goran Eriksson's Notts County, who are ready to make a club record offer for the 31-year-old.
Full story: Daily Mirror '

Notts County are probable for a deadline day shock, Sven to stock up on players he had at Man City that were actually rubbish.
