Why would you filter out the West Indies, by the way? If anything runs against those teams are more important because you actually have a chance of beating them. Struggled to beat Bangladesh too recently itbt.

I find him incredibly underwhelming. Looks like he should be really good but just... isn't. Fair enough you probably don't have anyone better so I'm not saying he should be dropped. But his record really isn't very good.
Career to date is below and I think it's decent. Filtered out West Indies in NZ as they were the second weakest attack he would have come up against, and emphasises that he's certainly not dining out on weak bowling.

v Australia 160 @ 40.00
v Bangladesh 40 @ 13.33
v England 553 @ 50.27
v India 322 @ 64.40
v South Africa 44 @ 11.00
v Sri Lanka 132 @ 44.00
v West Indies 65 @ 21.66

You may find him underwhelming, but suspect most NZ followers find him somewhere between exhilarating and infuriating. Still only 25 also.

Definitely infuriating. With Taylor you never feel as secure watching him as you feel watching Ryder. Once Ryder gets to 30 you're happy, when Taylor gets to 30 its "phew, now everyone cross their fingers and toes"

Get Broom in at 6, van Wyk in at 7 and stick Fulton in at 3 as a stop-gap measure till Myburgh qualifies.

Watling and Ingram to open ??

I wonder what Taylor's First Chance Average is
How long have you been reading the forums for to know about the FCA? I have known about it for at least 7 years.

I agree with Strawman. I think an average of 38 is ok. Fleming was internationally regarded and he fnished with an average of 40.

I also think that if Taylor had more support from his team mates and got to walk out there when the score was 100/2 or 150/2 instead of 40/2 his average would be higher because the pressure wouldn't be so great. I don't think I am saying anything that Strawman hasn't already said.

Finally I think Taylor is rated. I heard the Aussies players ponting included said that 'he was moving his feet really well when he batted against us".

I want to comment on the last dismissal against the SL left handed opener.
Vettori seemed to be deliberately bowling crap balls down the leg side - and he knew what he was doing because Sangakarra gloved one and then he ended up taking a wicket (admittedly in dodgy fashion) but I think our captain is a wiley operator. I am interested to see if he will continue this tactic to the left hander.

Yep, do that every time. If you do it wrong and he gets out, it's your fault.

Rain could save us.

Raining now. Man .. it's a heavy downpour. The groundstaff come from all around the ground with the covers and Daryl Harper is stuck in the middle! He wriggles out now, all wet and soaked. The grounds staff spread the covers . . It looks very unlikely that we can get in any further play today. But who knows ..

If SL declare at lunch tomorrow that leaves about 150 overs to go. Clearly there's no way NZ batsmen will last that long, however if rain were to wash out 60-80 overs and we were able to bat out the rest that would be some small achievement.

A good article on cricinfo on McCullum's non-performances in tests. Makes some good points, though misses a few more, some of which were added in the comments. Seems unsure of his role and how he's supposed to approach an innings. Lacks both the defensive technique and the temperament to bat through difficult periods. They point out that he's fallen 23 times between 20 and 49 and say that's after he has the measure of the bowling - I'd say he rarely has the measure of the bowling (defensively especially) and those 23 times are usually when he manages to muddle his way past 20 before reality hits. Only looks comfortable going for the slog, usually after the game is lost. Ironically often seems to get out with a defensive prod or going hard at a defensive shot.

Also disagree that it was lapses in concentration that had him dismissed in the 90s vs England. More than that I think it's an inability to handle pressure, especially from himself (there are numerous other examples - KKR captaincy, opening in ODIs, previous attempt at no. 5 in tests etc).
