Also, really think that now is the time for McCullum to stand up and score runs when we really need them. I'm struggling to remember the last time he made a good score when the pressure's been on - all his recent good innings have been in lost causes when the game's effectively already over.

I don't think it's ever happened to be honest. McCullum generally responds miserably to pressure*

*except when batting at 7 in one-dayers.
Only one I can think of was his 90-something at Lord's last year. Checking back on that scorecard, I see he came in at 41/3 with James Marshall at the crease. If that's not enough to give you the creeps, I don't know what is.

Alright then, we'll give you a trial. Try to find some relatives a few generations back who moved to NZ and we'll see if we can claim you as a local.
I'm 16. My Dad is moving out in a few years. 5 years residence to claim citizenship through residence? 8 or 9 years I'll be 24/25 and eligible. Though if you haven't solved your problems by then and I'm the best option... you're beyond help.

We fail at batting. Again.

Hope Taylor brings up a century. If Taylor can get a hundred and fifties to two of McCullum, Oram and Vettori we can get a decent score.

I'm a useful batsman who bowls more than useful spin. Had most of my success opening.
Shame i'm not from NZ tbh.
I said useful... not great or good. Then again useful is good enough for NZ :p

How about you lose the lip? Or do you have aspirations of becoming a troll? Is Scaly your mentor?

This top order isn't working, but then again who do we have to replace them? I really don't want Taylor batting at number 3, especially when he's only just finding his feet at 4. Disappointed with Flynn, but then again I was always uncertain as to whether he was ready to become a number 3 after only a few months of moderate success at 6. Guptill has a real problem against the short stuff, and he won't ever make big scores until he sorts it out.

Can't see us making much more than 225 tomorrow. Hoping against hope for a Taylor masterclass and some lower order thwacking from McCullum and Vettori, but it's difficult to see. It's a real shame that Vettori will be coming into bat with absolutely no one below him.

On another note, Franklin's bowling form for Gloucestershire continues to disappoint. He's been thoroughly outbowled by Jon Lewis all season, and people who argue that he must be picked ahead of Oram should realise that Franklin simply doesn't appear to be much of a bowler anymore.

There is an article on cricinfo talking about patels 4 wicket haul. I kept my belief - Patel | Cricket News | Sri Lanka v New Zealand 2009 | Cricinfo.com

I was not that impressed 3 of the 4 were tail enders - and the 4th had 140 to his name and was fatigued from smacking him around earlier.
I still think he should be dropped. But with this performance if he performs in the second innings he has a case for continued selection.

I don't understand why Guptil hasn't been practising his back foot play since the India series. How many dismissals does he need to realise it is a problem. We have full time coaches working with the squad - they seem to be remiss in their duties as well.

As for Flynn he has the swagger and confidence of a top order player but that is about it. He does have a few good knocks behind him including a 50 against India. But he needs a better average.
I hope he comes through in the second inning. I think that we have the weakest top 3 batsman in test cricket with the exception of Bangladesh. And with Tamim coming on I don't think we are too far ahead of them.

Guppy looked so bloody good too until he got out (bar a few dodgy moments with the short ball). It's interesting, because he plays the pull well, he just struggles to keep it down. You'd have to think that isn't a major technical deficiency and can be sorted out relatively quickly.

Taylor needs to go absolutely massive today, in the 150+ realms if we are going to come away with a (incredibly unlikely) win or draw.

It's a shame that so much pressure has to be put on Taylor every time he bats. It's a bit like "Ross, if you don't score 100+ we are effectively going to crumble for 200 all out..no pressure though mate!".

Two comments - I am concerned he is going to quit or retire or burn out from the pressure at like 28. We need to find a better top order from somewhere if we can. Realise I might be asking the impossible.
Secondly - because of this pressure I am fine if he wants to go for a big hoik every third game or so. I forgive him when he does this.

Williamson and Watling?

They would be the two players I'd back to come into the team that haven't played for NZ before. Williamson hasn't been going that well for NZ A though, he still needs another 1-2 years in domestic cricket batting at three.

Neil Broom. I've always thought he was a far better FC bastmen then Flynn, he's alot more solid in defense.

Can't say I agree with that tbh. Players in every team of the world face pressure at different times, and how many of them go for a big hoik?

Guptill's "weakness" won't be solved in the nets, or by playing NZ first class level bowlers. He basically needs to get out pulling enough against top class bowling to learn when to pull and when to not.

That's really disappointing - was hoping he would come to his senses and focus on his bowling a bit more. In saying that, will probably go at and score hundreds of runs domestically for Wellington again this season. Still myself wouldn't count out Franklin batting at 6 or 7 for us in the future, primarily as a batsman who bowls overs if the conditions are helpful for swing bowlers.
