*Official* New Zealand in Sri Lanka

Yes.

Sri Lanka have already batted themselves into a non losing position. New Zealand's attack doesn't even look capable of getting the five (possibly four) wickets which would take you into Sri Lanka's tail.

Can't see how that made sense tbh. Would have got Tuffey in there somehow, probably at the expense of Martin.

Martin the only seamer who has bowled well in both games?

I think Patel's place could be in troube here if he doesn't start taking poles. In the past he's bowled very well on the flat pitches he usually gets included in but with a FC average of over 40 and some very poor bowling on pitches that suit him, plus his one dimensional bowling, I dunno....he's lucky Nathan McCullum is only a good one day bowler and that Nethula is prone to pie chucking in between good games, but that may not last forever.

At this rate Patel won't even be the best spinner in his FC side, Woodcock and the unfortunately dropped Houghton must be breathing down his neck. :p Athlai to disagree with me and abuse Oram and Elliott :p

Who is Nethula? I've never heard of him, though I'm guessing a young up and coming spinner?

Kiwis underwhelm. They can always compete but they can never win.
Tbf, this is SL in SL.

The only game we've well and truly thrown away from a supposedly unbeatable position is that one in England. You could argue the Indian Napier test too but that was at Napier which is 9 times out of 10 a drawathon.

But I agree, for the ability in this team they don't have the results to show for it. What really has me though is the likes of Oram have been around seemingly forever and this is only his 33rd test. We really play bugger all games don't we?

Typically patient effort from Sri Lanka again today, ominous signs with Jaywardene and Samaraweera once more settling in for the long haul. Was disappointed, from a neutral's point of view, that Sangakkara almost gave his wicket away, he had displayed little regard for the two fielders out on the sweep throughout, and to his credit executed it generally very well, but once he went aerial, there was only one place he was going, back to the shed. Lovbely batsman to watch, his driving exquisite again.

But it is Jayawardene and Samaraweera that this NZ attack, that do lack the necessary pentration on these kind of pitches to be effective, will have to try to dislodge in the morning, otherwise it could be another long, hot and frustrating day for the tourists.

With regards to Jeetans bowling I thought he started out very well in his first few overs.
But then they broke for tea and the SL players decided to play a few shots. Vettori should have predicted this and placed a few more men back on the fence for patel. But instead he left men at mid on and mid off. Jayawardene (spelling?) was then able to hit patel over the top one bounce for four. Patel then got unsettled. He was worried about over pitching and being slammed again - so he started to drop the ball in shorter and he got smacked through the covers a few times. Vettori eventually dropped a man back and patel recovered his length but the horse had bolted.

I think that Vettori needs to set far more defensive fields with patel. And secondly I think patel needs to keep tossing it up if he gets smacked for a big four rather than trying to drop it in shorter. He panics after he gets smacked. It is a test match after all and he should be encouraging batsman to chance their arm against him.

Yeah exactly - Patel needs to show *something* this series that means he is worth retaining next time we encounter a pitch that turns.

In his first 6 or 7 tests (before this series) I've seen a lot of people talking about how he should be selected for more tests, bowls well in tandem with Vettori, just wait until he bowls on pitches that actually assist spinners etc. Forgetting the obvious corollary that if you're bowling on a pitch that takes turn you're probably also bowling at much better players of spin.

Not seeing much chance of his average coming down below 40 at the moment. Whether another NZ spinner develops and overtakes him or not will be interesting over the next year or two.

To be honest, Patel really is one dimensional. He doesn't really vary his pace and he doesn't have a great arm ball. I can't imagine too many spinners who bowl consistent 85-90km/h off breaks with little variation troubling the Sri Lankans.

Yup, exactly, would be very surprised if Patel would be good enough to play FC cricket anywhere other than NZ (or maybe Zim).

He's a budget budget off spinner if ever I saw one

While Nethula's average isn't that crash hot, his strike rate is simply miles better than any other slow bowler in the country. Doesn't mean much of course, as Brooke Walker had a decent strike rate in FC cricket, but it's encouraging none the less.

Southee would be absolute fodder on these pitches against these batsman. Martin, O'Brien and Tuffey are all much better choices at present.

Yes Bond would make a difference, but please let him get through the ODI series against SL and India without injury before even thinking about him playing tests again.

Oram should get the next test series at home to perform (with the bat especially); if he doesn't then dropping him would be justified.

Patel probably won't be in the test side again for quite a while.

Statistically Bruce Martin is our number two spinner. Sure he's similar to Vettori, but that won't do any harm.
In his past four seasons, Martin's been pretty poor, averaging over 45 per wicket. It seems he was a lot more potent, back when he was a brat.

What's with all these people putting down Patel? He's doing the best he can. I'd like to see one of u go out there and do one millionth as well as Patel. U people need to pull ur head in

Jeetan Patel is that you?

Regarding Nethula. He's been doing quite well for NZ A in India has he not, he picked up 4-40 odd the other day. And remember he plays a lot of cricket on the Eden Park pitch.
