Initially I had mixed feelings when I read your post about vettori being on the selection panel. I mean it is a lot of power for a captain to have.
But on the other hand if it is what Dan wants and keeps him enthusiastic about playing for his country. Then lets make him happy by putting him on the panel. In reading Dan's book the turning point he mentioned that being a selector was a long term goal of his.

Personally I think Turner needs to go. There should be accountability for us being ranked 7th for a long time.

Did anyone see the blackaps on tour on sky sport today. A special documentary about their 20/20 world cup campaign. It showed Dan giving the team a talking to after they lost their final game against sri lanka.
"As captain I don't know how many times I have had to make a speech like this but guys have to improve and want to improve and take a good hard look at themselves in the mirror. If you don't want to improve then you shouldn't be playing international cricket."
Sounds like an intense scene I can see why guys quit at that level at age 33 or 34 if they don't feel they have the drive anymore.
It was a good doco.

Also I think Dan is a fan of Oram I think during the India series he asked if Oram was available and wanted him to play. Thought I would mention this for those who don't rate Oram. Dan also personally lobbied for Martin back in the team after he was dropped.

Mark Richardson : Forget testing, he's a chucker - Cricket - NZ Herald News

Winging and Moaning has begun! Murali has 770 wickets whats this going to achieve now! horrible form. Expected better. Maybe its time to look at fault at ur own team rather than taking the easy option.

Let me start it for him

Mcintosh- Dire player, Any ball can get him out. Cant play short ball.
Guptil- Shocking Backfoot Defence
Flynn- Can nick anything on a good length
Taylor- Slogs too many times, loses concentration
Oram-Well what can you say, medium pace with nothing on it. Any spinners bunny.
Patel- Rather he improves his dire bowling than trying to become a batsman
Oh dear...!

My first post on CW.

I'm massively against Moles and Vettori being in the selection panel, particularly Moles. We all know what happened under the Bracewell era and a coach or captain shouldn't have those powers or responsibility. His sole job should be focused on the players that have been selected and getting the best out of them.

On Vettori I'd hate to see favoritism play a part in his decision making, which I think it will. If his long term goal is to be a selector that's great, but maybe should wait till he's retired from playing Cricket. I feel that NZ Cricket is taking two giant steps backwards.

Yeah, it is a bit of a conflict of interest.
The current selectors have been temperamental though, fresh blood could perhaps do some good.
Get Fleming in there

Not Terrible
Hes the captain of course he should be allowed to select his team.

Not to keen on Moles, solely because of his ND bias.

It's great that Vettori will now have a say in selection, he is level headed, he knows what the team needs and as captain he can see what players are giving 100% out on the field.

This NewZealand team needs help fast.

Could someone make a post about Moles' cricketing resume. What qualifies him to be a good selector. I feel less comfortable about his appointment too.

why would you be uncomfortable with Moles becoming a selector? It makes sense to me. Surely as coach, and responsible for the teams results youd want some control over who is in the line up. He has made murmors about not being happy with the team he's being given over the last 12 months. Maybe we're likely to see some changes now?

Either way if i were coach id want some control other wise youd feel a bit miffed if you got the sack cause you never had what you considered to be the best players playing...which is really what he's been saying for the last 12 months

Could we lock this thread for all NZ participants until the test series is over? According to a certain poster, no-one - and I mean no-one - in New Zealand gives a flying crap about test cricket, so this thread is surely pointless until the hit and giggle starts.

Sri Lankan fans, however, are more than welcome to continue posting on here.
I just read that thread...HAHAHAHAHA!

My favourite part was the bit where he seemed to forget his argument completely. He said no one in NZ cared about us losing the test to Sri Lanka, then when you challenged him he replied with:

There are plenty of people in Australia that care about Lacrosse. They even have their own forums in which they discuss their favourite sport. Whats your point?
That's just too funny :laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

I can see why Moles wants the job as selector. So your post is well taken. It is just that I don't know his background very well. Should we appoint all coaches to the position of selector? Just a question. With Vettori's appointment they are saying it is a merit based decision and that they won't be appointing every captain to the position of selector. Read that in the paper today. They didn't make any similar statement about coaches.

In other news they confirmed the champions trophy squad yesterday will there be a thread for us to discuss that. Forgive me if there is already one. Here is the team.

ICC Champions Trophy squad

Daniel Vettori (captain)
Shane Bond
Neil Broom
Ian Butler
Brendon Diamanti
Grant Elliott
Martin Guptill
Gareth Hopkins
Brendon McCullum
Kyle Mills
Jacob Oram
Jeetan Patel
Jesse Ryder
Ross Taylor
Daryl Tuffey

No franklin, no styris.no nathan mccullum. And no peter mcglashan who I think should be in ahead of hopkins. Having said that havn't seen too much of hopkins. Just like McGlashans style.

You can talk about it here Hurricane

EDIT: The problem with Dan and Andy as selectors is that they won't be able to go around the domestic circuit and watch the games, especially with the series' at home coming this sumer. Dan will only be aware of the form and talent he has played with or against, assuming he actually takes part. Suppose Andy could nip to a few matches, but it's difficult to make selections when you don't have a clear image of who you can select.

What most ppl do not know is that as well as all the lab testing Murali has also bowled with a solid metal brace on in which case it would have been physically impossible for him to bend his arm.

Unfortunately this footage hasn't had much worldwide media attention or publicity ..... for any one who has seen it it's quite obvious that in the case of Murali's unorthodox action it has all to do with his physical make up and optical illusion crated by that.

Murali with metal brace bowling to Michael Slater.

Here's another from sky sports explaining his unusual bone structure.

I'm pretty sure most people on this site would have known that Murali bowled with that brace on. Hardly simulates match conditions though does it?

In saying that, I don't have a problem with Murali and it's such a non-issue that it isn't even being discussed in this thread (bar a short time when someone bought up the Richardson article).

Sri Lanka deserved the win in the end, praise for Vettori though. Two Sri Lankan Players shone to whom enough credit or press was given before the game. Thushara and Prassana.

Prassana is simply fantastic old style keeper. Unrewarded for his hard work and high skill level.
I have seen the highlights from all five days of the opening Test, and one of the things that stood out for me was the quality of Prassana's wicket-keeping. In the modern day so much focus is on the keeper's ability to score big runs, and generally in a positive fashion. But to see a genuine keeper keep in such a pure manner is thrilling also. He's not stood up to regulation finger spinners, or slow bowlers, he has to read Murali and Mendis every ball they deliver to ensure he takes any chance that comes his way, and judging purely from the highlights, his keeping in that opening Test was sublime.

Is there anyone that saw this game live have anything further to add on Prassana's performance with the gloves in the opener ?

Prassna conceeded four byes (i think) that was off thushara a delivery that swung after passing the batsmen down the leg side.

His work to the spinnner were high quality, even when they were not wickets he picked up everything with a quick movement of feet. before the batsmen had time to look back the ball was in the gloves.
