*Official* New Zealand in Sri Lanka

NZ 87/2.

Excited to see Mendis bowling off breaks. It's evident that his figer is giving away as I predicted when he first came in to SL side. That legspin he used to get is missing, and he has to bowl round the wicket to lefties, and eventutally to right handers as well.

Murali is clearly struggling with the knee. Follow through is lacking, more overspin imparted than side spin, and more flight than usual. He may not get through more than one or two test matches without breaking down.

Thushara bowled few jaffas. Pity that he could not get few mo

Is Jayawardene's wicket keeping and Sri Lanka's top five so good you can afford to carry Prasanna's batting? Don't think so.

Not sure why Matthews is in the side also, not good enough with the bat or ball. Sri Lanka should have gone with three spinners and played a real batsman infront of Prasanna.

The two grittiest players in the team make for some nervous watching.
Ugly not gritty. Vettori has more stomach for the fight with the bat than those two. Flynn scratches around and looks awful for two hours and people think his showing grit on a wicket where batsman are hitting it through the line and making merry.

Same difference.

He'll have to score soe runs. Not mammoth amounts, but something meaningful. Today he was terribly unlucky to get out like that. But until Murali plays PJ will be the keeper IMO, because Murali is little too hot to handle for Kaushal Silva or dinesh Chandimal who are next on pecking order.[/quote]

He averages 46 with the bat and 35 with the ball. If he can continue in that form, what else would you be asking? His function in the team is #6 batsman and when needed as 5th bowler. He possess a great technique, but needs to put his head down and stop throwing away his wicket.

Edit: Mathews is the best batsman in last FC season as well.

Surprised at how good Angelo's first class average is. From watching him, despite looking sound he doesn't inspire huge amounts of confidence that he will constantly contribute. Case in point was his innings today where the opposition were on their knees.

Don't think his bowling has much longevity in test cricket.

Samr has had that celebration for a while now even before lahore.

PJ needs contribute atleast 30 in every iniings otherwise there are the two youngsters Miagra mentioned who can take over. Mathews will learn to convert his starts. Everytime he is batting doesnt look like he can get out to any obvious weakness, unlike Many of Sri Lanka's batsmen in past and present. example like Tim Mac in the current game.

Guptil must be kicking himself. I still think NZ may get draw out of this. There are no terrors on the pitch

Regarding Guptil.

In the India series martin crowe pointed out that Guptil had deficiencies with his back foot defence. And I remember him twice getting out playing that shot.

Last night I was watching to see if he had improved his technique. But he didn't play any back foot defensive shots. Instead he played pull shots to everything short. This worked for a while. But eventually he got out to the pull. You can't play pull shots early in your inning and expect to get away with it. You need to have your eye in.

It was like he decided I am no good at back foot defensive strokes so I am going to play pull shots instead. If that is what he decided then I am not impressed. He had months to work on his back foot defence.

These things can take time. Its the first game back too. At the end of his first full season of tests I think we'll have a better picture of how he's going.

Tim McIntosh on 36. This means that anyone with a lesser score has scored negative runs on the McIntoshometre of Direness. :p

Not a bad effort to bowl them out for 450, but I can't help but feel that all this really does is show how poorly we bowled on day one. Gotta love Marto, really hope he can stay injury free and in good enough form for long enough to get to 200 test wickets.

I haven't seen any of the match so far, but it seems like the pitch isn't offering too much turn, so I suppose there's a good chance that we'll make it past the follow-on. Given that, and the long run weather forecast, I'm almost tempted to put a few on the draw.

Looks like play won't start on time again. Hopefully follows the pattern of the first two days and we get play in two hours or so.

Going to be a big day for NZ batsmen, and predictably most of the responsibility will fall on Taylor and Ryder. Would like to see McIntosh and Patel hang around for a while longer first though.

How will you react if McIntosh gets a 100?
