Michael Hussey – Is his time up?

I think they'll want to see Hughes make some adjustments before he's recalled; and also want to see SWatson make less than 50 (at least once) before they shunt him down the order.

Watto shouldn't bat at 6, it's not a position that suits him. Would have him at 4 if Hussey goes, but we all know the Chosen One will move to 4 if Hussey goes so that leaves #5. He'll bat 3 when Ponting retires, of that I'm sure.

You saying that Watson, or Clarke, will bat three when Ponting retires?

Much like Ponting, reckon the selectors will bat Watto at 6 just to keep him in the side then slot him up to 3 when the time comes. Agree that Clarke should bat 4.

No one can really predict what the current Aussie selectors will do. IMO, the selectors themselves have made several poor selections over the past two series. It is of my view that Hussey will be given one final chance in the first two tests of the next series. If he fails at that, then they would drop him.

I actually think that 6 is too low for Watson. 4 seems ideal atm. Maybe Watto at 4 and Hussey back down to 6 where he had most of his success. See if Hussey's form returns with change in position.

Batting 4 in the Aussie side seems to be a bit of a seniority thing if comments by Mark Waugh and Damien Martyn are any indication. Agree that Watto suits batting higher than 6 but so did Ponting. And barring a fairly dramatic loss of form, 4 seems destined to be Clarke's for as long as he wants it once Huss moves (if they're desperate to keep huss, I don't think it's any disgrace for him to move to 5 for now). 6 seems to be the apprentice spot and if I was Watto and someone said to me, "Look you can bat 6 for now and, if you do well, can bat higher once Ponting goes or you can wait until the spot you want becomes available." well, geez, it's a no-brainer which way he'd go, surely.

Anyone think Ponting will begin to bat lower down the order, or will he stay at three until he retires?

Who knows what he will do but I will be very disappointed if he moved down. He is by far the best man for the job.

Can't see Ponting ever moving down the order in either form, nor any reason we'd want him to. Not like he's yet to start not performing his role by any rational standards, or that we'd want him facing spinners first up more often.

If Hussey goes, no doubt Clarke will take No.4 position. Watson will either continue opening or get shunted to No.5 or 6 with North.

I don't think Ponting would ever leave that no.3 position, its a position that he has made his own and he shouldn't even think of batting at any of the other positions.

Would be pretty interesting as well to see whether Watto continues to open the batting for us in tests after the Ashes, because if the unthinkable happens and Hussey gets dropped, then that would leave a vacant spot in the middle order, and that would most probably mean that either Watto back comes into the middle order, making way for Prince, or Mussey gets replaced by Dussey.

With all of Watson's fitness issues, his only chance of opening will be if he gives up bowling. Else he will become another Flintoffesque case with injury limiting him to IPLs ;)
