Getting back to the real news...Oldham's team is going to look pretty unrecognisable this year...our signings so far

Dean Brill
Joe Jacobson
Jonathan Worthington
Pawel Abbott
Rob Purdie
Dean Furman
Keigan Parker
Phillip Ojapan
Rene Steer
Andy Holdsworth

A little Hartlepool love in being assembled by Penney, with a few lower league journeymen thrown in. Mid table mediocrity looks like the go.

Still, looks like the new stadium should be a goer soon.

On Ferguson, it's well documented he only rubbishes teams and managers that he sees as rivals and genuine threats. Taking it as a compliment tbh.
Was thinking this myself - witness Fergie's gushing praise for Wenger in recent years, coinciding pretty much exactly with Arsenal's drop from top 2 to 3rd/4th.

Sparky and the City hierarchy would be really pleased to be getting this kind of comment I reckon. Though I don't know whether to laugh or cringe when someone from United calls anyone else arrogant...

Which department is going to waste money and time to go after a nobody when there are already 6 people admitting to affray? This was a scuffle at a lounge, not the Jack Ripper murders. How about you mention why it probably would have.

Also, our legal systems are largely the same.
I'm not an expert, but at least I've lived here for twenty years and know plenty of people who were charged for assault in circumstances similar to Gerrard's in that time. It's hardly "wasting money and time" when you have him on camera smacking someone repeatedly, that's a pretty nailed-on conviction, and police (and lawyers for the prosecution, obviously) absolutely love getting convictions.

Find the uproar re: the billboard of Tevez pretty amusing really. Of course it's a genuine wind up, just like the 33 years banner in Old Trafford. What's fair for one isn't fair for the other? Pretty soft on United fans part I reckon, if you can't laugh at yourself who can you laugh at?

Had a quiet chuckle tbh. Loved Fergie's rant though. Amused me.

Found it a bit strange on his part actually, usually when he speaks about these types of things he's calm and unassuming. This one seemed a bit off tilt, almost Keegan-like. He seemed genuinely upset in some stages.

Yeah likewise, thought the Owen poster wasn't bad either.
The Stretford one with crutches? Was made in a thread on bluemoon, there was some others in there which were pretty hilarious. Didn't do the email rounds though ala. the crutches one.

No it's not Jack the Ripper, which is why no one (outside of Salford, anyway) is calling for the death penalty. But many of us are curious - putting aside who it was in the dock - as to how he got off. If I admitted throwing three punches at a guy, and was caught in the act on CCTV , I would have thought I'd be in some trouble.

If I then had the gall to enter a not-guilty plea on the grounds of self-defence against a bloke who was outnumbered 7-1 and didn't throw a punch, I'd surely get the book thrown at me without mercy. Now I'm not a legal man, so I'm just genuinely curious as to how he managed to dodge this legitimately?

Yeah that's the one - was it not a real poster?

Our Crown Prosecution service, God bless ‘em, do apply their charging standards consistently and I’d be very surprised if, in similar circumstances, that you or I would have been treated any differently. That said you are quite right that there would probably have been a different outcome.
Indeed, as I have said before, I have sat in on a number of trials, in which the CPS have pressed charges against people for very similar offences. Further more, my Dad who worked for the CPS for about 20 years also confirms, that this sort of thing reaching court is commonplace.

Different circumstances and different people with, I am sure, different facts. One cannot use such a flawed and generalised view of the law to then retrospectively question it's justice - or lack of it.

Indeed, a lot of this argument is pointless considering we do not have all the facts, we have not listened to all the relevant testimony and so to make accusations of bias, if not corruption, is not very intelligent.

Hitting someone is not illegal in all circumstances; neither does being of a party which outnumbers another party in a fight, relinquish the right to self-defense.

If the fight were 100-1 and you are part of the 100 and the 1 is coming after you - or so you reasonable could assume - then you are entitled to throw a punch if the danger is apparent enough for you to do so. The fact that you have 99 other mates with you is irrelevant.

When they already have 6 people admitting to affray? Then the CPS really does waste money. Bodies like the CPS are always under scrutiny to cut costs, and so they will routinely take cases that they have a good chance of winning. In this case, it could have been said to have already been won.

Well, not really, if the others all admitted the charge, then they must have had reasonable grounds for expecting to secure a conviction against another who was involved an equal amount.

Fair enough, thanks. It still seems a little flimsy to me but we're not going to change the verdict, nor was I party to everything that went on anyway.

Can't wait for the season to start so we have some actual football to talk about. :)

That's not a "must" it is assumed that they will have reasonable grounds. They can try a case on not much evidence if they wish - it just means they will lose. There was not much of a case here anyway with much of it "he said, she said" and a grainy video to compliment it.

This was a lounge-room scuffle; who would waste time and money on getting one more party convicted when there are already 6 taking the hit? Case closed, move on. No "show trial" was needed.

Haha, yeh man. I hate the off-season. Not just because of all the crappy transfer rumours but because no real football.

BTW, which team do you support Sean?

Can we move the **** on, so over reading about this crap.
Yeah, agreed.

I'm Australian and I live in London. So United, obviously.

My football team is Italian so I don't have a team in England. In saying that I always look out for the results of Tranmere and Exeter when they play.
