It's all very odd really, can't work out if it's: a freakish occurence; or the technology aids the older guys; the competitive nature of the senior tours; the younger generation being so cowed by the Tiger that they don't have the bottle to seize the day or what really.
i don't know if the senior tours are such a big factor, however competitive they might be...the technology is definitely a big factor and yes, watson was a great champion who was uncowed by the likes of nicklaus and trevino and miller....he can draw on all the memories of getting it done, very different from the younger generation who grew up in awe of woods...that is probably a significant factor as well...

Certainly can't remember a 59 year old being even remotely close to winning a major before:unsure:
not surprising because i don't think it has ever happened before...

They said at some point 48 was the oldest major winner back in the sixties - the US PGA
Yep, Julios Boros and I remember the golden bear winning the Masters and Irwin winning the USOpen, they must have been mid-40s, but it's a big difference between that and nearly 60.

I think Jack competed quite well, one Masters (when O'Meara won I think) he must have been in his fifties then, but he didn't have a short putt to win it

yeah he was 58 and finished 4 shots off the pace in '98...but then the same arguments work for nicklaus as well, even more so than watson because he was an even greater golfer...

Watson :(

Would have been one of the great sporting fairytales of all time.

What a player.

It was nice to see Greg Norman doing one of his patented chokes in the Senior Open. Quite like old times:)

Yeah, doesn't normally lose from that position.....

but does he really want to win. He's won his last three tournaments before majors and then we all know what happened then:unsure:

he can't help winning....and he has the wgc at firestone before the pga so he just needs to concentrate on "not winning there"...however he has won there 6 times already and his last win in 2007 was by 8 shots so it's going to be tough for him....

Oh right, I thought the PGA was closer for some reason. I suppose you could say that by winning two-in-a-row would be a different pattern anyway.
