Brisbane are gone. Lucky to get as close as they did tbh. Biggest thing going for them is Dave Taylor's arse.

The 2009 premiers weren't running around at Parra Stadium today, that's for sure.

Glad we lost today, about time some of those lazy ****ers at the Broncos were given a wake up call and showed we arent anywhere near as good as we think we are. We are a lazy team with no structure who continually think we'll win games on reputation. Here's a message for you boys, START BLOODY PUTTING IN.

They are going to be screwed next year then.

Taylor was supposed to be the next big thing, Origin and Australian rep by the time he was 25, unfortunately given his attitude and the fact hes taken the cash over doing the hard work I'm sure we'll see him end up being a fine Jim Beam cup and Queensland cup bench player within 4 years.

Yeah, Taylor has been a big disappointment.

McGuire had a pretty good game, and Lockyer did everything humanly possible to win the game on his own. What a champion. The only good thing about our current situation is that in 2006 we lost 6 straight and still won the comp. However, much different personnel on that occasion.

Also word is that Lockyer is going to sign a new contract (he will still get to play rep footy), but it will mean Hunt will leave Brisbane. St George have made a massive offer to tempt him to re-unite with Wayne Bennent.

Lockyer lifted noticeably in the second half. I only took the kids today so the young bloke could say when he's my age he got to see him play. We sat at the southern terrace end (no etoh) so it was good to watch him from behind the sticks and the way he ran things.

Parra played well - lots of enterprise in the forwards is good to see. But I have to make this confession.

I have seen, both live and on TV, every Parramatta half back since John Kolc. Since Sterlo, I've seen all the duds - Marty Seal; Tulsen Tollett; Stu Galbraith, but this current bloke takes the cake. He's been **** every game he's played. Sad thing is, today was one of his better games, and he still nearly cost us the game. Good thing is, he slightly shaded Wallace on the day.

Best thing about today from our POV was young Mortimer's defence. Thaiday ran at him all day, and he missed him once, and on that occasion he knocked him over enough to have another player finsih him off. WD young fella.

Should say it appears, given this morning's reports, that I was too harsh on Wallace, who is apparently turning out ATM with broken ribs.

Gutsy stuff, and I know Brisbane are in a hole right now, but I wonder if he's actually doing them a disservice by being so courageous. guess it depends on who their alternative half back options are.

Kyle, we are not going to win the comp.
Never say never. Didn't James Bond teach you that?

We've been hit harder than any other time by the Origin period, I'll admit that, but coming into the Origin period we were the team to beat. I'm hoping that after the Origin period we can return to that level, our run home isn't that bad. Also, if we had our 2nd bye we'd be sitting on 5th position, 1 point behind Melbourne.

Bit early to say teams will win or won't win the comp. Unless of course mathematics says otherwise.

So the Sharks and Roosters are a chance then?

On Wallace, I hope he wasn't picked for Origin with broken ribs. It's one thing to remain Brisbane's best number 7 but surely we don't need a busted halfback playing Origin.

I'll do a mini lesson on Probability. The following are the probability values -

Impossible
Unlikely
Even chance
Likely
Certain

Impossible means something can not happen
Unlikely means although it may happen it probably won't.
Even chance means there is just as much chance of something happening as there isn't - in other words 50/50
Likely means it is more likely to happen than it isn't.
Certain means something will happen.

If we went through the NRL ladder we can't say for any team it is impossible. For most teams well out of the 8 it would be unlikely and for the top 5 or 6 it is likely.

Even chance only occurs on grand final day and certain only occurs when one team is up by 20 with 1 minute to go.

When teams can't mathematically make the top 8 then the probability of them making the final is impossible, giving them no chance.

So, to answer your question - yes.

I understand the laws of chance, but that's hardly relevant here is it? This isn't a roulette table where the only variables are the spinning of a wheel. We're talking about human beings with varying strength, skill, intelligence and workrate levels, teams with varying levels of cohesion and organization not to mention variables such as morale, coaching nous, and the simple bounce of the ball (luck). Barring the last factor, ALL of these factors (among others) are against the below mentioned teams in most games, and they have to overcome these obstacles every week for the probabilities you mention to come into play.

The Roosters for example, would need to win 8 of their next 9 to even make the 8 and there's a chance (that word again) that might not even be enough. From there the odds of them beating the best teams in the competition for another 4 weeks get even longer.

Surely it's at points like these, with the variables stacked to such astronomical levels that you can get up, and make statements like....

The Roosters will not win the NRL in 2009. It will not happen for the same reason Megan Fox won't be waiting in my bed when I get home, and that I wouldn't be able to run the 100m in under 10s to get there. The mathematical chance of such a thing happening is so remote, the odds so astronomical that it is barely worth mentioning barring an amusing discussion on the nature of probability.

When you grow up in a footy mad family with 3 older brothers, you learn how to tackle guys bigger than you. Kid can hit, he sat me on my arse a couple of times playing footy at school and in the mortimer backyard. This was when he was about 14-15 and i was 18.

If the Knights, Cowboys and Storm had their 2nd bye as well, Brisbane would only be sitting 7th actually. Not to mention the fact that there are currently 10 teams with a better for/against than Brisbane, and they are 72 points worse off than any of the teams currently ahead of them on the ladder.

I'm not writing Brisbane off yet, but as it stands they're going to have a tough time making the 8, let alone finishing top 4 or making a grand final.
