Whenever we played against top nations in the T20 WC, he failed (22 off 29 against Pakistan is hardly worthy of a mention, despite how poor everyone else was). His 7 in 7 balls against South Africa isn't much to go by, but we did end up losing by only 1 run, so 7 balls for only 7 runs was a bit of a waste.Polo? Styris was far from Rubbish...
He came in at the very back end vs Scot and SA and was not out, scored 40+ as you mentioned vs Ire. Top scored vs Pakistan in that debacle and failed for the only time vs SL
On top of that the two warm up games (not your usual warm up games over here) they wre televised and full houses at Lords and The Oval he scored 42 off 25 (Aust) and India 29 off 18. He even played AGAINST a full strength NZ for a combined X1 and made 51 off 30 balls. (NZ bowlers were Vettori/Butler/Franklin/Oram/OBrien/N Mac)
Hardly a 'rubbish' tour
BTW Bond is older than Styris
I never said I blamed him for the loss against South Africa, I fully blame McCullum for that one. I don't even recall mentioning Oram. But when we needed our seniors players the most, they crumbled. Styris is in that category. Sure, it may be unfair, but that's just the way it is.Of course warm up games count for nothing. But to say his tour was rubbish is far from true. They were top quality opposition who were full strength.
You cant seriously blame Styris or Oram for that matter for the SA game can you? When Styris walked out to bat NZ needed 35 off 3 overs of which 2 were bowled by Parnell and 1 by Steyn. That is crazy. Taylor and B Mac were terrible there crawling along to a small total and putting ridiculous pressure on the rest of the order.
BTW since Styris' stellar 07 World Cup he is averaging 37 with the bat SINCE then. Of course last summer was a waste as his thumb was broken (by WI Edwards') and he only played 1 ODI and didnt bat or bowl. Hardly terrible
But hey you go ahead and give contracts to unproven players (again, by that i mean last year) and in some cases some who have never played for NZ (Arnel) now that is ridiculous and a whole different thread.
This is just from what commentators during matches have said on radio, so yes they're estimates, but seeing as the likes of Bond and McClennaghan were playing last year, and we know Bond is 140+ and apparently McClenananannaghan is a little bit quicker, they're in the right place to make an estimate.I'm interested to know how you know how quick he bowls. No speed guns at domestic games.
Though, he has looked like one of the quicker domestic bowlers when i've seen him play.
I personally would like him in the ODI squads, but as he is an ODI specialist, and the fact that Elliott has walked into his possy in the team, means I don't mind either way whether he gets a contract, though when crap like McIntosh gets in he should have one ahead of him.Slightly off topic i know, but how can you guarantee me than Bond is more Athletic and in better shape than Styris? I acknowledge at first glance you may think that would be the case.
I remember reading online last summer (not my northern Hem summer) Glenn Turner saying that people would be surprised but Styris consistently features in the top 3-4 in the fitness tests in the squad. Im originally from Hamilton (hence my following of Styris) and he was always the star sportsman and not just cricket but Rugby/Soccer both Waikato and so on. I swear im just a fan and not a stalker lol.
Anyway forgetting my bias/stalking i think its wrong when as mentioned his tournament wasnt that bad plus Dan Vettori regularly talks about how Styris is the best player of spin in NZ and we go to SL this year, have a champions Trophy against these teams and then have Pak in the middle east as well. There is also talk of Bang coming to NZ but im not sure if they play ODIs when theyre there?
My point is that we have very little talent that can we be this selective about a guy who has been a star for us for the last 10 years. Remember Fleming named him in his best ODI X1 that he ever played with and again i acknowledge that he isnt as good as he was but nor has his form completely fallen off either. Its only 4 ODIs agao that he went back to back Man Of the Match in England remember???
I use the word "guarantee" loosely, because I can't actually prove it one way or the other. But from what i've heard, Bond trains harder than ANYONE, plus he doesnt look 63 years old, not that that's relevant.Slightly off topic i know, but how can you guarantee me than Bond is more Athletic and in better shape than Styris? I acknowledge at first glance you may think that would be the case.

McIntosh didn't take his spot though. They were always going to give contracts to two specialist openers (and rightly so), so if it wasn't McIntosh then it would have been either Redmond or How.I personally would like him in the ODI squads, but as he is an ODI specialist, and the fact that Elliott has walked into his possy in the team, means I don't mind either way whether he gets a contract, though when crap like McIntosh gets in he should have one ahead of him.
I think there is zero chance we will see Lou Vincent anywhere near the New Zealand team.Is lou vincent back from icl yet would be good for the A tour.![]()
Dan Vettori gets a $174,000 retainer as No 1-ranked player. This decreases in increments of $6000 until No 18. The bottom three retainers are each worth $72,000. Players also receive $7325 for each test, $3175 for an ODI and $2075 for a Twenty20 international. How much NZ pay to the contract players???
